About the Lab

Professor Ji-Hyun Hwang's research lab focuses on the intersection of education, cognitive psychology, and environmental design, with a strong emphasis on how learning environments—both digital and physical—affect students’ mathematical reasoning, spatial thinking, and psychological well-being. The lab investigates the role of perceived control, attributional beliefs, and learning environments in shaping academic motivation and achievement, particularly through international large-scale assessments like PISA and TIMSS. Additionally, the lab explores biophilic design principles in historical architecture, linking human psychological responses to natural elements in built environments. These interdisciplinary studies integrate quantitative methods such as structural equation modeling, multilevel modeling, and spatial analysis to uncover cultural and contextual influences on learning and cognition.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATHEMATICAL LITERACY AND OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATHEMATICAL TASKS
Jihyun Hwang, Yeajin Ham
SJR Q3Journal on Mathematics EducationOA

We investigated how the opportunity to learn (OTL) with different types of mathematics tasks are related to mathematical literacy and the role of perceived control in the relationship between OTL and mathematical literacy. The structural equation modeling was applied to the data of 1,649 Korean students from the PISA 2012 database. OTL with the four different types of tasks – algebraic word problems, procedural tasks, pure mathematics reasoning, and applied mathematics reasoning – were measured

“Can I do well in mathematics reasoning?” Comparing US and Finnish students’ attitude and reasoning via TIMSS 2011
Jihyun Hwang, Cristina Runnalls, Sneha Bhansali, Khajidsuren Navaandamba, Kyong Mi Choi
SJR Q2Educational Research and Evaluation

This study investigated differences between the US and Finland in terms of how students’ attitude is related to mathematical reasoning skills through the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011. Attitude towards mathematics was observed via 3 TIMSS contextual variables: liking mathematics, valuing mathematics, and confidence in mathematics. Scores for mathematical reasoning were collected from the TIMSS 2011 database. We used hierarchical linear modelling to construct

Relationships among locus of control, learned helpless, and mathematical literacy in PISA 2012: focus on Korea and Finland
Jihyun Hwang
SJR Q1Large-scale Assessments in EducationOA

The purpose of this research is to gather empirical evidence for attribution theory (Weiner in J Educ Psychol 71(1):3–25. https://doi.org/10.1037/0022-0663.71.1.3 , 1979) to explain students’ feelings of helplessness when learning mathematics. The relationships between mathematics literacy in PISA 2012 and learned helplessness were also observed. Korean and Finnish students’ responses were analyzed with ordinal and linear regression analyses. Similar patterns were found between the two countries

Characteristics of Online Child-Rearing Community and Their Effects on Community Loyalty and Purchase Intention of Baby Wear
Jihyun Hwang, Choonsup Hwang
SJR Q2Journal of the Korean Society of Clothing and TextilesOA

This study examines the characteristics of the online child-rearing community launched by the voluntary motivations of consumers, and the effects of those characteristics on community loyalty and the intentions to buy baby wear via community sites. The study was implemented by a descriptive survey method using an online questionnaire. The sample consisted of 212 members of online child-rearing communities. The data were analyzed by frequency, factor analysis, and regression analysis. Results are

Teachers’ use of assessment data for instructional decision making
Kyong Mi Choi, Jihyun Hwang, Jessica Jensen, Dae Sik Hong
SJR Q1International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology

Summative assessment data are rarely adapted into instructional decision making. In this project, teachers and researchers work together to identify how teachers use diagnostic data (students’ development of common core standards). We analysed students’ responses to trimester tests that teachers and researchers modified together using cognitive diagnosis modelling approach. Teachers’ use of diagnostic data was explored through interviews and observations. It was found that teachers tended to use
