About the Lab
Professor Ji-seon Chae's research lab specializes in clinical anesthesiology and pain management, with a strong focus on optimizing perioperative care and developing novel interventions for neuropathic pain conditions. The lab investigates the hemodynamic assessment using point-of-care ultrasound, evaluates anesthetic agents for neuroprotection in neurosurgical patients, and explores innovative therapeutic strategies such as exosome-based treatments for chronic pain syndromes like complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). A key direction involves translational research, bridging preclinical models with clinical applications to improve patient outcomes in postoperative and chronic pain management.

Subclavian vein (SCV) assessment was proposed as a reasonable adjunct for measuring the inferior vena cava. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether the preoperative diameter and collapsibility index of the SCV or the infraclavicular axillary vein could predict the incidence of hypotension after induction of general anaesthesia in patients undergoing laparoscopic
Background: Interscalene brachial plexus block (ISB) is a common regional technique to manage acute postoperative pain for arthroscopic rotator cuff tear repair. However, rebound pain may compromise its overall benefit. Our aim was to investigate the primary hypothesis that perineural and intravenous dexamethasone have different effects on rebound pain after resolution of ISB for arthroscopic rotator cuff tear repair. Methods: Patients aged 20 years scheduled for elective arthroscopic rotator cuff
Cerebral vasospasm is the most important cause of morbidity after an aneurysm clipping in the early postoperative period. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate whether the incidence of vasospasms differs when using propofol or desflurane for an emergent aneurysm clipping. The data from 102 patients (50 in the propofol group, 52 in the desflurane group) were analyzed. The occurrence of vasospasm based on daily transcranial Doppler, angiography, and cerebral infarction during 14 days
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a condition associated with neuropathic pain that causes significant impairment of daily activities and functioning. Nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) is thought to play an important role in the mechanism of CRPS. Recently, exosomes loaded with super-repressor inhibitory kappa B (Exo-srIκB, IκB; inhibitor of NFκB) have been shown to have potential anti-inflammatory effects in various inflammatory disease models. We investigated the therapeutic effect of Exo-s
Purpose: This study focused on analysing the performance and the perception of importance about workload of ambulatory nurses and nurse-aides for quality of nursing. Method: The subjects of this study were 126 ambulatory nurses and 117 nurse-aides in 6 secondary and 4 tertiary hospitals. The method of data collection was used the questionnaire. Result: As a result, First, nurses' activities that the performance score is above 3.0 are reception, guidance, reservation, confirm, checking medical re
BACKGROUND: Lumbar transforaminal epidural block (TFEB) is an effective treatment modality for radicular pain due to lumbar disc herniation (LDH). The addition of steroids is more effective than local anesthetic alone in TFEBs for patients with LDH. Moreover, the efficacy of TFEBs has been reported to be positively correlated with the volume of injectate. We hypothesized that high-volume TFEBs without steroids effectively alleviate axial back and radicular pain associated with LDH. This study co
Thigh-high compression stockings reduced the incidence of hypotension but not that of CDEs. Our results suggest that other factors, beyond hypotension itself, contribute to CDEs and in other words, efforts just to reduce the incidence of hypotension may not mainly contribute to a reduction of CDEs occurrence in the BCP under general anesthesia.
Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a useful treatment for chronic pain, but it can cause damage depending on its application site. Here, we describe the case of a 54-year-old man who underwent PNS for brachial plexopathy in 2015. One lead was implanted on the left medial cord to stimulate the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve, and the other was implanted on the radial nerve to stimulate the posterior antebrachial cutaneous nerve. Both leads were inserted near the shoulder joint but did not
This retrospective study aimed to determine the predictive value of radiologically measured psoas muscle area (PMA) for intraoperative hypotension (IOH) using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves in older adult patients with hip fractures. The cross-sectional axial area of the psoas muscle was measured by CT at the level of the 4th lumbar vertebrae and normalized by body surface area (BSA). The modified frailty index (mFI) was used to assess frailty. IOH was defined as an absolute thre
BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of the hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle is essential for informed clinical decision-making in the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Knee OA is commonly associated with varus deformity, where the alignment of the knee shifts medially, leading to increased stress and deterioration of the medial compartment. The HKA angle, which quantifies this alignment, is a critical indicator of the severity of varus deformity and helps guide treatment strategies, including corre
The incidences of herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) are significantly influenced by age. As individuals age, the occurrence of spinal disorders increases, thereby raising the likelihood of HZ and PHN coexistence. Considering this, our study aimed to explore the potential impact of pre-existing spinal disorders at the nerve level where HZ developed, on the severity of zoster-associated pain (ZAP) and the incidence of PHN. For our investigation, we retrospectively analyzed a tota
Patients with Klippel-Feil syndrome require much attention during anesthesia because of congenital abnormalities in head and neck regions and the high probability of neurological damage from cervical spine instability during endotracheal intubation. We report a case of successful endotracheal intubation using a videolaryngoscope in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome who experienced difficult transnasal intubation.
BACKGROUND: A variety of medications are available to manage painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), but the proper treatment remains challenging. Accordingly, various neuromodulation modalities have been used. However, no prospective clinical trials have evaluated the use of scrambler therapy (ST) in painful DPN. This study aimed to explore the long-term effects of ST in managing painful DPN. METHODS: The patients received 10 consecutive STs of 45 minutes every 1 to 2 days. The primary ou
Background: Ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus block (US-ISB) has been reported to be effective postoperative analgesia for arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Although considered rare, various neurological complications have been reported. We retrospectively evaluated 668 patients for post operation neurological symptoms including hemidiaphragmatic paresis and post-operative neurologic symptoms after US-ISB.
Background/Objectives: The psoas: lumbar vertebral index (PLVI) is a simple and convenient measure to assess central sarcopenia. Recent studies have utilized the psoas area to indirectly assess sarcopenia and frailty, exploring their associations with various health outcomes. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the PLVI and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) in patients aged 60 years and above following a herpes zoster (HZ) infection. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis
