About the Lab

Professor Ji Won Hwang's research lab focuses on the epidemiological and clinical associations between metabolic and inflammatory markers—particularly serum uric acid—and chronic diseases in the Korean population. The lab investigates the role of uric acid in cardiovascular, renal, and urological conditions, including hypertension, gout, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and arterial stiffness. A key research direction involves understanding the long-term health implications of hyperuricemia and metabolic changes such as BMI fluctuations in middle-aged adults. The lab also explores autoimmune and rheumatic disease markers, such as rheumatoid factor, in relation to bone health and systemic inflammation.

SJR Q3MedicineOA

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is one of the most important lethal complications in pregnant mothers. It is also associated with the subsequent development of chronic hypertension. The objective of this study was to identify the clinical risk factors of postpartum chronic hypertension in women diagnosed with HDP.Six hundred patients as HDP, who diagnosed and followed-up at least 6 month after delivery, were included in the study. We divided the included subjects in 2 groups based on t

SJR Q3MedicineOA

We investigated the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and brachial ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) in an apparently healthy population. We performed a cross-sectional study on middle-aged Koreans who completed a yearly health-screening program between January and December 2014. Subjects with coronary artery disease, diabetes, or hypertension were excluded. Linear regression analyses were used to study the relationship between SUA and baPWV. Multiple adjustments were made for variables

Relationship Between Changing Body Mass Index and Serum Uric Acid Alteration Among Clinically Apparently Healthy Korean Men
Jiwon Hwang, Mi Yeon Lee, Joong Kyong Ahn, Hoon‐Suk Cha
SJR Q1Arthritis Care & Research

OBJECTIVE: Gout and hyperuricemia incidence is increasing worldwide, reflecting pandemic overweight and obesity. However, the magnitude of the association of body mass index (BMI) changes with serum uric acid (UA) level in the general population has remained unevaluated. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study enrolled 27,422 Korean men who underwent a comprehensive health check-up between 2015 and 2017. BMI change was categorized into 7 groups. The relationship between BMI change and serum UA

Higher Levels of Serum Uric Acid Have a Significant Association with Lower Incidence of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Healthy Korean Men

SJR Q2MetabolitesOA

Gout has been correlated with the risk of incident benign prostatic hyperplasia. In line with increasing prevalence of hyperuricemia, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) level and the incidence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) among clinically healthy middle-aged men. We performed a cohort study in 101,091 Korean men without LUTS at baseline who completed health checkups between 2011 and 2016. LUTS were evaluated using the International P

Rheumatoid Factor Positivity is Associated with Lower Bone Mass in Korean Male Health Examinees without Clinically Apparent Arthritis

Objective. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between rheumatoid factor (RF) positivity and bone mineral density (BMD) in male Korean subjects without any history of joint disease. Methods. Of 84,344 males who had undergone a comprehensive health checkup program in 2012, 1,390 male health examinees were recruited, whose BMD and RF results were available. A RF titer 20 IU/mL was considered positive. BMD was measured at lumbar spine (L1L4) or hip (femoral neck and tota

A SWCNT-FET device wrapped with DNA molecules was fabricated and the electronic transport properties were investigated. The gate modulated current-voltage characteristics of a bare SWCNT-FET device showed a p-type conduction behavior, which was consistent with generally characteristics in previous studies. However, the characteristics of the DNA-wrapped SWCNT-FET showed clear staircase structures. In addition, the conduction type was changed from p-type to n-type and the transconductance of the

The cardiovascular system may be one of the target organs of both immunoglobulin G4 related and non-related systemic multifocal fibrosclerosis. We present a case of IgG4 non-related systemic multifocal fibrosclerosis mimicking mitral stenosis on echocardiography. For a more detailed differential diagnosis, we used multimodal imaging techniques. After surgical biopsy around the abdominal aortic area in the retroperitoneum, histological examination revealed IgG4 non-related systemic multifocal fib

Decline of Pulmonary Function Is Associated With the Presence of Rheumatoid Factor in Korean Health Screening Subjects Without Clinically Apparent Lung Disease

SJR Q3MedicineOA

Although higher-than-normal levels of rheumatoid factor (RF) are often observed in subjects without specific medical problems, little is known about the influence of RF on pulmonary function in health screening subjects. This study aimed to determine the association between the presence of RF and decreased pulmonary function in Korean health screening subjects without any history of joint disease or clinically apparent lung disease.A total of 115,641 study subjects (age range, 18-88 years) parti
