About the Lab
Professor Ji Yoon Choi's research lab focuses on translational and clinical studies in surgical oncology, transplantation medicine, and environmental health, with a strong emphasis on long-term outcomes and patient-centered outcomes. The lab investigates predictors of disease recurrence after cancer surgery, particularly gastric carcinoma, and evaluates surgical techniques and graft survival in pancreas transplantation. Additionally, the lab explores the neurological and systemic impacts of long-term environmental exposures, such as air pollution in industrial complex areas, and examines evolving consumer behaviors in digital health and e-commerce, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. These diverse research directions reflect a commitment to improving clinical decision-making through population-based data and real-world evidence.

15Silicone implants were noted to induce calcification when inserted for a long time, causing long-term morphologic changes. This should be taken into consideration when choosing silicone implants for augmentation rhinoplasty.
PURPOSE: There are few studies that have focused on the predictors of recurrence after gastrectomy for gastric carcinoma. This study analyzed the patients who died of recurrent gastric carcinoma and we attempted to clarify the clinicopathologic factors that are associated with the timing of recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From June 1992 to March 2009, 1,795 patients underwent curative gastric resection at the Department of Surgery, Hanyang University College of Medicine. Among them, 428 patie
Pancreas transplantation is considered a therapeutic option for patients with complicated diabetes mellitus. In this study, we compared survival rate between patients on the waiting list for pancreas transplant alone(PTA), simultaneous pancreas-kidney(SPK) transplant, and pancreas after kidney(PAK) transplant and transplant recipients. A total of 503 patients (PTA:n = 116; SPK:n = 303; PAK:n = 84) and 280 PT recipients (PTA:n = 89; SPK:n = 155; PAK:n = 36) were retrospectively analyzed at our ce
Emerging evidence suggest that long-term exposure to air pollution may induce adverse effects on the central nervous system. However, no study explored the associations in large industrial complex (IC) areas which are one of the major contributors to air pollution. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the pollution status and the association between residential proximity and incidence of neurological diseases near two major ICs characterized as multi-purposed ICs in Korea. A retrospective cohort o
Imbalances in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels are associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS), and the underlying mechanism is partly in alignment with that of lead exposure causing MetS. Many studies have reported the association between lead exposure and MetS, but no study has considered the possibility of TSH mediating lead's effect on MetS. Therefore, we aimed to examine the association between lead exposure and MetS considering TSH as a partial mediator. The data of 1,688 adults (age
BACKGROUND Although bladder drainage is effective for monitoring urine amylase levels to detect graft rejection, enteric drainage is performed more frequently. The optimal method for monitoring pancreatic enzyme secretions remains unclear. We investigated graft survival in recipients of bladder drainage and assessed the risk of graft rejection and failure after enteric conversion. MATERIAL AND METHODS From January 1999 to October 2015, we performed 318 pancreas transplantations at our institutio
Three-dimensional computed tomography venography is a useful tool to identify increased saphenous vein diameter and provides a complementary road map for surgery in patients with varicose veins. In this study, we investigated the correlation between saphenous vein diameter on computed tomography venography and venous reflux detected on duplex ultraonography. We enrolled 152 patients (213 extremities) who underwent endovenous laser ablation therapy, following high ligation of the saphenofemoral j
Graphene has many excellent properties such as wide specific surface area, outstanding electrical mobility, and high optical transmittance. Due to these advantages, which make graphene appropriate matrix supporting vanadium for the nanocomposite. Also, depending on the synthesis process, graphene can be obtainable graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). Moreover, RGO has been receiving increased attention due to its nature to easily reduced to graphene, referred to as RGO, which ha
Living donor renal transplantation may be successful in patients with APS following perioperative anticoagulation therapy. However, because of the high risk of TMA or vascular thrombosis in the early postoperative period, close monitoring for hypercoagulability and continuous anticoagulation is essential for maintaining graft function.
