About the Lab
Professor Jihee Seong's research lab focuses on maternal-fetal medicine and reproductive health, with a strong emphasis on prenatal diagnostics, preterm birth prevention, and the management of complications such as preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). The lab investigates the impact of pharmacological agents—particularly NSAIDs—on early pregnancy outcomes, as well as the microbiological and immunological factors influencing gastric and intra-amniotic infections. Their work also extends to rare gynecologic malignancies, such as hepatoid carcinoma of the ovary, combining clinical, pathological, and molecular approaches to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.

15Even though these samples were small, gastric mucosa could be more effective than gastric fluid in the detection of meaningful gastric microbiota by pyrosequencing.
There is a relationship between chronic H. pylori infection and gastric juice pH ≥3, which may originate from AG and IM in the body.
Purpose of review: The criteria for the diagnosis of intra-amniotic infection (IAI) were derived from a study of women at term in labor but is currently used as the main diagnostic tool for clinical chorioamnionitis. Regarding the inconsistent usage of the term, the diagnostic utility of clinical chorioamnionitis needs to be revisited. In this review, we addressed the critical issues on why the diagnostic criteria of suspected clinical chorioamnionitis should be changed.Recent findings
BACKGROUND: Existing data on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) during late pregnancy is well established, providing assurance. However, the use of NSAIDs during early pregnancy remains inconclusive owing to conflicting findings on adverse neonatal outcomes as well as the limited data on adverse maternal outcomes. Therefore, we sought to investigate whether early prenatal exposure to NSAIDs was associated with neonatal and maternal adverse outcomes. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors associated with successful amniopatch treatment in patients with iatrogenic preterm premature rupture of membranes (iPPROM) or spontaneous PPROM (sPPROM) before 23 weeks' gestation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study included 28 women who received amniopatch treatment due to iPPROM or sPPROM at 15-23 weeks' gestation. Patients' clinical characteristics before performing the amniopatch, factors associated with the procedure,
Primary hepatoid carcinoma of the ovary (HCO) is a rare type of ovarian tumor that resembles hepatocellular carcinoma both histologically and immunohistochemically in its staining for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). We describe a 51-year-old woman who presented to our hospital complaining of abdominal pain. Computed tomography scan revealed a large tumor in the pelvis. She underwent total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with tumorectomy. A right ovarian mass measuring 9×8×6 cm was foun
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neonatal outcomes of twin pregnancies delivered at late-preterm versus term gestation based on chorionicity and indication for delivery. STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study of women with twin pregnancies delivered at ≥34 weeks of gestation from 1995 to 2014. Subjects were categorized into two groups according to gestational age at delivery: late-preterm group (34-36 weeks) and term group (≥37 weeks). Neonatal outcome measures including neonatal intens
Postpartum pubic symphysis diastasis (PPSD) refers to the separation of pubic symphysis after delivery. It is typically diagnosed based on clinical symptoms and radiologic findings. This study tried to assess clinical characteristics and risk factors of PPSD. This was a nested case-control study matched for year of delivery and gestational age at delivery using a retrospective cohort of women who delivered vaginally at a single institution. The incidence of PPSD was 0.156% (33/21,131). The incid
BACKGROUND/AIMS: ) eradication. Hence, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of rifabutin-based rescue therapy, at least after three eradication failures. METHODS: eradication at least three times, were consecutively enrolled between 2007 and 2015 at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. The rifabutin-based rescue regimen was consisted of proton pump inhibitor (PPI), rifabutin (150 mg b.i.d.), and amoxicillin (1 g b.i.d.), given for 7 or 14 days. MIC concentration test by the agar dilution met
A rapid method for obtaining group B streptococcus (GBS) screening results has been required in the obstetric field. We aimed to determine the diagnostic performance of the Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) assay is acceptable compared to the existing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. The study involved 527 pregnant women aged 19 to 44 years. Rectovaginal swabs were collected between 35 and 37 weeks of gestation or prior to impending preterm births or term labor without GBS scre
Cryptococcal pneumonia usually occurs in immunocompromised patients with malignancy, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, organ transplantations, immunosuppressive chemotherapies, catheter insertion, or dialysis. It can be diagnosed by gaining tissues in lung parenchyma or detecting antigen in blood or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Here we report an immunocompetent 32-year-old male patient with diabetes mellitus diagnosed with cryptococcal pneumonia after a ultrasound-guided percutaneous supracl
Objective: To investigate the severity of histologic chorioamnionitis /funisitis according to the indication for preterm delivery and their corresponding neonatal outcomes. Method: This study included 411 singleton women who delivered between 21+0 and 31+6 week of gestation due to preterm labor (PTL, n = 165), preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM, n = 202), or incompetent internal os of the cervix (IIOC, n = 44). The primary outcome measure was the rate of severe histological chorioamni
BACKGRUOUND: We investigated the association between uterine leiomyoma (UL) and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in young women. METHODS: A nationwide population-based cohort study of 2,541,550 women aged between 20 and 40 years was performed using the National Health Information Database. Cox proportional hazards models were used to analyze the risk of incident T2DM according to the presence of UL and myomectomy. RESULTS: The mean age was 29.70 years, and mean body mass index was 21.31
