About the Lab

Professor Jihye Ha's research lab specializes in clinical microbiology and hematology, with a focus on improving the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases and hematologic malignancies. The lab develops and evaluates rapid diagnostic methods for bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing from blood cultures, while also advancing molecular techniques such as next-generation sequencing and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for detecting clonal abnormalities in multiple myeloma. Routine implementation of this short-term incubation method could provide ID results on the day of blood culture-positivity detection and one day earlier than the conventional AST method. The genus Kytococcus are pigmented, non-encapsulated, non-motile, aerobic, catalase-positive, Gram-positive cocci in pairs or tetrads. We report a case of Kytococcus schroeteri isolated from a blood specimen of a patient with pneumonia. The isolate was Gram-variable and difficult to identify using conventional biochemical tests.
