About the Lab
Professor Jin-gyeong Kim's research lab specializes in pharmacological and molecular mechanisms underlying oxidative stress, inflammation, and cancer progression, with a focus on natural compounds and bioactive peptides. The lab investigates the protective effects of phytochemicals such as [6]-gingerol and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) through Nrf2/ARE and NF-κB signaling pathways, as well as the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of novel peptides like papiliocin. Additional research explores the role of opioid growth factor receptor (OGFR) in lung cancer and anesthetic effects on neurophysiological monitoring, including bispectral index (BIS) and salivary excretion during surgery. The lab integrates in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models to translate molecular findings into potential therapeutic applications.

The objective of this study is to investigate the contributing effect of the nuclear transcription factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-mediated signaling pathway on the indirect antioxidant capacity of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) against oxidative stress in HepG2 cells. The result of an antioxidant response element (ARE)-luciferase assay showed that CAPE stimulated ARE promoter activity resulting in increased transcriptional and translational activities of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1).
Papiliocin is a novel 37-residue cecropin-like peptide isolated recently from the swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus.
