About the Lab

Professor Jin Kyu Lee's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on orthopedic surgery, particularly total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in younger and rheumatoid arthritis patients, aiming to improve long-term outcomes and reduce complications. The lab also investigates molecular mechanisms underlying congenital muscular dystrophies, particularly the role of glycosyltransferases like GnT-Vb in neural development and O-mannose glycosylation. Additionally, the lab explores patient-centered health interventions, such as using virtual reality to reduce preoperative anxiety in orthopedic surgery. These diverse research directions reflect a commitment to integrating clinical practice with molecular biology and health technology innovation.

techniques must be taken into account, in order to improve the results of TKA in this subgroup of patients. Preoperative Considerations Age and ActivityRA patients are often younger (by approximately 10 or more years) than osteoarthritis (OA) patients at the time of TKA.The life span of RA patients with a knee replacement is not well known, however, assuming that RA patients have a normal life span, a TKA in this subgroup of patients on average needs to last longer and accordingly, the potential

Cloning and expression of a Xenopus laevis oocyte lectin and characterization of its mRNA levels during early development

SJR Q2Glycobiology

cDNA clones encoding a soluble, calcium-dependent, melibiose-binding lectin from Xenopus laevis oocytes have been isolated, characterized, and expressed in bacteria. This lectin has been shown by others to be localized in oocyte cortical granules where it ultimately is released and participates in the formation of the fertilization envelope. A lectin with similar specificity has been purified by others from blastula and immunolocalized to specific locations in developing embryos, which suggests

SJR Q1Arthroscopy The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of a preoperative virtual reality (VR) experience of 3-dimensional (3D) reconstructed magnetic resonance images (MRIs) on anxiety reduction in patients undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. METHODS: Patients in the VR group watched a 3D model of their own MRI through a VR headset describing the anatomy of the knee as well as their own lesion of interest for an arthroscopic procedure. Patients in the non-VR (NR) group received standard preoperative information about

SJR Q1Spine

History of cerebral vascular disease, low hemoglobin and hematocrit levels at 1 day after surgery, and bad nutritional status were risk factors for delirium. As it is of great concern in older patients, careful observation is necessary for the management of patients with risk factors for delirium.

The severe phenotypic effects of altered glycosylation in the congenital muscular dystrophies, including Walker-Warburg syndrome, muscle-eye-brain disease, Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy, and congenital muscular dystrophy 1D, are caused by mutations resulting in altered glycans linked to proteins through O-linked mannose. A glycosyltransferase that branches O-Man, N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase Vb (GnT-Vb), is highly expressed in neural tissues. To understand the expression and function

The study examines the effects of a public emergency on citizens’ intention to use e-government services. Since the national disaster on September 11, 2001, the United States government has invested considerable efforts to increase homeland security and public safety. However, virtually no academic research has focused on the impact of public emergencies on e-government services. The study examines relationships between citizens’ intentions to use e-government services and factors that can i

Management of tibial bone defects with metal augmentation in primary total knee replacement: A minimum five-year review
Jin Kyu Lee, Cheol Hee Choi
Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery - British Volume

Bone defects are occasionally encountered during primary total knee replacement (TKR) and cause difficulty in establishing a stable well-aligned bone-implant interface. Between March 1999 and November 2005, 59 knees in 43 patients underwent primary TKR with a metal block augmentation for tibial bone deficiency. In all, six patients (eight knees) died less than four years post-operatively, and four patients (five knees) were lost to follow-up leaving 46 knees in 33 patients available for review a
