About the Lab
Professor Jin Soo Moon's research lab focuses on pediatric health and growth assessment, with a strong emphasis on anthropometric trends, childhood obesity, and metabolic biomarkers in adolescents. The lab investigates secular changes in growth patterns using national survey data and develops evidence-based growth standards to address public health challenges such as childhood obesity and developmental disorders. A key focus is identifying urinary metabolomic profiles to distinguish obesity from normal weight in youth, supporting early detection and intervention strategies.

15Growth charts are curves or tables that facilitate the visualization of anthropometric parameters, and are widely used as an important indicator when evaluating the growth status of children and adolescents. The latest version of the Korean National Growth Charts released in 2007 has raised concerns regarding the inclusion of data from both breastfed and formula-fed infants, higher body mass index (BMI) values in boys, and smaller 3rd percentile values in height-for-age charts. Thus, new growth
Purpose : Since 1967, The Korean Pediatric Society and Korean Government have developed Korean Growth Standards every 10 years. Last version was published in 1998. During past 40 years, Korean Growth Standards were mainly descriptive charts without any systematic nor statistical standardization. With the global epidemic of obesity, many authorities such as World Health Organization (WHO) and United States' Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have been changed their principles of growth charts to c
BACKGROUND: Childhood and adolescent obesity may lead to obesity and related complications in adulthood. Biomarkers of obesity can be useful for screening for obesity complications and promoting early intervention during school age. Thus, the metabolomic differences in obese children and adolescents should be investigated for identification of potential biomarkers. OBJECTIVES: We investigated urinary biomarkers to distinguish metabolomic characteristics between obesity and normal weight in adole
N ational health screening program for infants and children in Korea was launched in November 2007 to cope with current health issues, such as high prevalence of accidents and incremental trends of developmental disorders and obesity. It is a kind of population surveillance systems which contains history taking, physical examination, anthropometric measurements, screening for visual acuity and questionnaires with anticipatory guidance. This program has been successfully implanted as one of the p
An anthropometric survey is one of the most important approaches to use when evaluating the health status of children. Secular trends in body sizes, such as height, weight, head circumference, chest circumference, and body mass index showed significant changes over 40 years in Korea. A series of periodic surveys were conducted in 1967, 1975, 1985, 1997, and 2005 by the Korean Pediatric Society and Ministry of Health and Welfare. The quality of data from school health examinations and the Korea N
The incidence of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing worldwide, especially in the developing countries. It differs from adult disease in clinical manifestations, especially with regard to genetic predisposition in monogenic IBD. Pediatric disease also have a tendency to show more aggressive inflammation and greater extent of lesion. Newer drugs such as anti-tumor necrosis factor α have been known to make a difference in treating pediatric IBD. Recent studies suggested that t
Abstract Objectives Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterised by dysregulated mucosal immune responses associated with genetic, environmental and microbial factors. Recent therapies targeting key inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α emphasise the importance of innate immunity in the development of IBD. Methods We examined the distribution of innate immune cells such as innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) and myeloid cells in the intestinal epithelium from children diagno
This study aimed at developing an artificial-neural-network (ANN)-based model that can calculate the required time for restoring the current indoor temperature during the setback period in accommodation buildings to the normal set-point temperature in the cooling season. By applying the calculated time in the control logic, the operation of the cooling system can be predetermined to condition the indoor temperature comfortably in a more energy-efficient manner. Three major steps employing the nu
This study was conducted to develop an artificial neural network (ANN)-based prediction model that can calculate the amount of cooling energy during the setback period of accommodation buildings. By comparing the amount of energy needed for diverse setback temperatures, the most energy-efficient optimal setback temperature could be found and applied in the thermal control logic. Three major processes that used the numerical simulation method were conducted for the development and optimization of
We report the fabrication, characterization, and field emission properties of (silicon oxide) SiOx coated thin-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (t-MWNTs). The coated t-MWNTs show improved field emission behavior. Initially, raw t-MWNTs (diameter ∼5–8nm) were functionalized by acid treatment. Using spin on glass as a Si precursor, SiOx was coated on the nanotubes by routine chemical methods. The coated samples were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier tra
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a new prognostic score based on changes in serial laboratory data from patients with pediatric acute liver failure (PALF). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data on 146 patients with PALF at the Seoul National University Children Hospital (SNUCH) and the Asan Medical Center (AMC). Daily morning laboratory records were obtained for up to 7 days after diagnosis of PALF: total bilirubin (TB) (mg/dL), international normalized ratio for prothrombin time (INR)

Purpose:Results of the Korea National Health Screening Program for Infants and Children, which was launched in November 2007, were evaluated for future research and policy development. Methods:Data from a total of 2,729,340 cases were analyzed. Five visiting ages, such as 4, 9, 18, 30, and 60 months, were included. Several parameters such as stunting, obesity, and positive rate of developmental screening were also analyzed. Telephone survey was performed in 1,035 users. For the provider survey,

This study aims at developing an indoor temperature control method that could provide comfortable thermal conditions by integrating heating system control and the opening conditions of building envelopes. Artificial neural network (ANN)-based temperature control logic was developed for the control of heating systems and openings at the building envelopes in a predictive and adaptive manner. Numerical comparative performance tests for the ANN-based temperature control logic and conventional non-A
