About the Lab
Professor Jin-Woo Kim's research lab specializes in the development of advanced biomedical technologies that integrate artificial intelligence, nanomaterials, and medical imaging for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The lab focuses on leveraging convolutional neural networks and Bayesian deep learning for automated and accurate cephalometric analysis in orthodontics, while also exploring the photothermal antimicrobial potential of carbon nanotubes for next-generation nanotherapies. Additionally, the lab investigates molecular mechanisms of liver carcinogenesis and the design of functional nanomaterials for precision medicine. These interdisciplinary efforts aim to bridge computational intelligence with clinical diagnostics and nanomedicine.

15Lateral cephalometry has been widely used for skeletal classification in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. However, this conventional system, requiring manual tracing of individual landmarks, contains possible errors of inter- and intravariability and is highly time-consuming. This study aims to provide an accurate and robust skeletal diagnostic system by incorporating a convolutional neural network (CNN) into a 1-step, end-to-end diagnostic system with lateral cephalograms. A multim
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Unique properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) would open new avenues for addressing challenges to realize rapid and sensitive antimicrobial diagnostics and therapy for human pathogens. In this study, new CNTs' capabilities for photothermal (PT) antimicrobial nanotherapy were explored in vitro using Escherichia coli as a model bacterium. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were incubated wit
BACKGROUND: Despite the integral role of cephalometric analysis in orthodontics, there have been limitations regarding the reliability, accuracy, etc. of cephalometric landmarks tracing. Attempts on developing automatic plotting systems have continuously been made but they are insufficient for clinical applications due to low reliability of specific landmarks. In this study, we aimed to develop a novel framework for locating cephalometric landmarks with confidence regions using Bayesian Convolut
Mean values (n=10 drill sequences) for maximum recorded temperature (Max TºC), change in temperature (ΔTºC) from baseline were as follows. The changes in temperature (ΔTºC) were 1.57ºC and 2.46ºC for the lowest and the highest values, respectively. Drilling at 50 rpm without irrigation did not produce overheating. There was no significant difference in heat production between the 3 implant drill systems (p>0.05). No implant drill system produced heat exceeding 47ºC, which is the critical tempera
One step at a time: DNA linkers were placed at defined locations and in defined 3D orientations on a colloidal nanoparticle. Because the implemented ligand-replacement strategy was carried out sequentially, DNA linkers maximally segregated, producing a nanoparticle with linkers at 90 or 180° angles (see picture). These building blocks should enable assembly of anisotropic nanostructures with precisely designed geometry and complex functionality. Detailed facts of importance to specialist readers
Abstract Bioactive food compounds, such as lycopene, curcumin, phytosterols, and resveratrol, have received great attention due to their potential health benefits. However, these bioactive compounds (BCs) have poor chemical stability during processing and low bioavailability after consumption. Several delivery systems have been proposed for enhancing their stability and bioavailability. Among these methods, porous biopolymers have emerged as alternative encapsulation materials, as they have supe
BACKGROUND: Cancer cells recurrently develop into acquired resistance to the administered drugs. The iatrogenic mechanisms of induced chemotherapy-resistance remain elusive and the degree of drug resistance did not exclusively correlate with reductions of drug accumulation, suggesting that drug resistance may involve additional mechanisms. Our aim is to define the potential targets, that makes drug-sensitive MCF-7 breast cancer cells turn to drug-resistant, for the anti-cancer drug development a
AIM: We aimed to investigate the association of periodontitis and oral hygiene indicators with changes in blood lipid parameters in a nationwide, population-based cohort in a longitudinal setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included nationwide health screening program participants who underwent oral health examination in 2009-2010 and follow-up examinations for lipid profile without exposure to lipid-lowering agents. RESULTS: During the 5.19-year median follow-up, 65,078 individuals (mean age at
BACKGROUND: This clinical case presented a novel method of segmental mandible reconstruction using 3D-printed titanium implant with pre-mounted dental implants that was planned to rehabilitate occlusion. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old male who suffered osteoradionecrosis due to the radiation after squamous cell carcinoma resection. The 3D-printed titanium implant with pre-mounted dental implant fixtures was simulated and fabricated with selective laser melting method. The implant was successfu
Bone biomarkers have been suggested for the risk assessment for osteonecrosis of the jaw, a serious complication associated with bisphosphonate (BP) use; however, no consensus has been reached. This study investigated the possible associations between bone biomarkers and the development of bisphosphonates-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). This is a case-control study of 37 patients with BRONJ (age, 73.6±11.2years) who had at least 1 sample available at diagnosis, out of which, 35 were ta
Antiresorptives are the most widely prescribed drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis. They are also used in malignant bone metastases, multiple myeloma, and Paget's disease, and provide therapeutic efficacy on those diseases. However, it was reported that the occurrence of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) could be related to antiresorptive exposures, and there have been many cases regarding this issue. Therefore, a clearer definition and treatment guidelines were needed for this disease. The Ame
