About the Lab

Professor Jin Wook Kim's research lab specializes in neurosurgical oncology and radiosurgery, focusing on the management and long-term outcomes of intracranial tumors such as craniopharyngioma, meningioma, and vestibular schwannoma. The lab investigates prognostic factors, visual and hearing preservation, and tumor control following stereotactic radiosurgery, with strong emphasis on histopathological classification and individualized treatment strategies. Their work integrates clinical outcomes with advanced imaging and hospital information systems to optimize patient care and treatment efficacy.

Short-term VD secondary to the surgical insult and the recurrence of the tumor were strong predictors of long-term visual outcomes after surgical treatment for CRP. STR alone may be an ineffective strategy for achieving tumor control and optimal visual outcomes in patients with CRP.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the radiosurgical outcomes of patients with nonbenign meningiomas retrospectively and sought to identify prognostic factors for local tumor control after radiosurgery with an emphasis on histopathology. METHODS: Between 1998 and 2010, 35 patients with 49 atypical or anaplastic meningiomas were treated with radiosurgery. The mean tumor volume and marginal irradiation dose were 3.5 cm3 (range 0.3-25.3) and 16 Gy (range 12-21), respectively. RESULTS: The actuarial local

OBJECTIVES: We prospectively investigated the efficacy of corticosteroid medication in salvaging acute hearing deterioration after radiosurgery for vestibular schwannoma (VS) and analyzed prognostic factors for hearing preservation. METHODS: Forty-one patients with serviceable hearing treated with gamma knife radiosurgery between 2004 and 2006 were included. Nineteen patients who suffered acute hearing deterioration after radiosurgery were treated with oral corticosteroids. The efficacy of corti

Since the World Health Organization (WHO) classification for central nervous system neoplasms was declared in 2000, chordoid glioma of the third ventricle has been noted as a newly recognized tumor for central nervous system neoplasms. Although there is not enough universal experience to know the nature of this tumor due to its rarity, the origin of chordoid glioma was guardedly proposed to be the ependymal cells of the third ventricle. Such an idea has been primarily based on the specific locat

Objective : With improved technology, the values of intraoperative computed tomography (iCT) have been reevaluated. We describe our early clinical experience with a mobile CT (mCT) system for iCT and discuss its clinical applications, advantages and limitations. Methods : Compared with intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging, this mCT system has no need for major reconstruction of a preexisting operating room for shielding, or for specialized instruments or equipment. Patients are placed on a

What is the Long-term Benefit of Direct-acting Antiviral Therapy in Chronic Hepatitis C?

Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) has become a curable disease with the advent of potent antiviral drug. Interferon-free regimens with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) have not only reduced adverse drug reactions but also increased sustained virologic response (SVR) rates. The possibility of viral eradication is no longer an urgent clinical issue. Instead, the cost of DAA remains as a major barrier to the universal implementation of this magic bullet to all infected patients. Clinicians are challenged to

Gamma Knife Surgery for Brain Metastasis from Renal Cell Carcinoma : Relationship Between Radiological Characteristics and Initial Tumor

Objective : The authors have speculated that metastatic brain lesions from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) show diverse radiological patterns and tumor responses after Gamma knife surgery (GKS), and have hypothesized that these can be predicted from tumor radiological characteristics. The goal of the current study was to identify the radiological characteristics of RCC brain metastases and the predictors of initial radiosurgical response after GKS. Methods : A retrospective analysis was performed on
