About the Lab
Professor Jina Kim's research lab focuses on advancing medical imaging and minimally invasive surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes, particularly in pediatric and geriatric populations. The lab investigates innovative applications of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for functional tissue imaging, including Doppler, polarization-sensitive, and molecular imaging extensions, with translational potential in clinical diagnostics. Additionally, the lab explores surgical safety and outcomes in complex patient groups, such as infants with congenital heart disease and older adults with thyroid disorders, emphasizing individualized risk assessment. Laparoscopy can be performed safely in infants with CHD who need abdominal surgery. Although further studies may be useful in determining which infants with congenital cardiac disease benefit the most from use of laparoscopy, minimally invasive techniques can be applied to routine and complex abdominal procedures.
