About the Lab
Professor Jiwon Ryu's research lab focuses on advancing clinical and translational research at the intersection of biomedical engineering, nephrology, and artificial intelligence. The lab investigates the impact of environmental factors—particularly air pollution—on kidney diseases such as primary glomerulonephritis, while also exploring molecular mechanisms linking ion channels like TTYH2 to cancer progression. A key emphasis is placed on developing AI-driven solutions for clinical decision support, including automated sodium intake estimation in hospitalized patients and optimizing antibiotic use in pneumonia. The lab integrates vision-based surgical instrumentation tracking and protein interaction studies to improve patient safety and therapeutic precision.

15Robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery is effective for operations in limited space. Enhancing safety based on automatic tracking of surgical instrument position to prevent inadvertent harmful events such as tissue perforation or instrument collisions could be a meaningful augmentation to current robotic surgical systems. A vision-based instrument tracking scheme as a core algorithm to implement such functions was developed in this study. An automatic tracking scheme is proposed as a chain of
While extensive studies have elucidated the relationships between exposure to air pollution and chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disorders and diabetes, the intricate effects on specific kidney diseases, notably primary glomerulonephritis (GN)—an immune-mediated kidney ailment—are less well understood. Considering the escalating incidence of GN and conspicuous lack of investigative focus on its association with air quality, investigation is dedicated to examining the long-term effects of
Glomerulonephritis (GN) has been associated with many solid and hematologic malignancies. However, cancer prevalence at the time of GN diagnosis has been rarely examined. We aimed to evaluate the cancer prevalence in patients with GN at the time of kidney biopsy and to compare the results to those of the general population. A total of 1,155 patients who underwent kidney biopsy between 2003 and 2017 were included. We investigated patients diagnosed with cancer within one month of kidney biopsy. T
TTYH2 is a calcium-activated, inwardly rectifying anion channel that has been shown to be related to renal cancer and colon cancer. Based on the topological prediction, TTYH2 protein has five transmembrane domains with the extracellular N-terminus and the cytoplasmic C-terminus. In the present study, we identified a vesicle transport protein, β-COP, as a novel specific binding partner of TTYH2 by yeast two-hybrid screening using a human brain cDNA library with the C-terminal region of TTYH2 (TTY
BACKGROUND: Measurement of sodium intake in hospitalized patients is critical for their care. In this study, artificial intelligence (AI)-based imaging was performed to determine sodium intake in these patients. OBJECTIVE: The applicability of a diet management system was evaluated using AI-based imaging to assess the sodium content of diets prescribed for hospitalized patients. METHODS: Based on the information on the already investigated nutrients and quantity of food, consumed sodium was anal
The misuse and overtreatment of antibiotics in hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) can cause multi-drug resistance and worsen clinical outcomes. We aimed to analyze the trends and appropriateness of antibiotic changes in hospitalized patients with CAP and their impact on clinical outcomes. This retrospective study enrolled patients with CAP, aged > 18 years, admitted from January 2017 to December 2021 at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, South Korea. We examin
The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence of the headache attributed to Temporomandibular disorder(TMD) symptoms and to investigate the relationships of headache and TMD. 66 patients seeking care for signs and symptoms of Temporomandibular disorders(TMD) and Orofacial pain in the department of oral medicine, Dental Hospital, Chosun University, from January, 2008 to June, 2008, were recruited. The obtained results were as follows : 1. A muscle and TMJ origin combined was the most

Enhancement in safety functions based on automatic tracking of surgical instrument position to prevent inadvertent harmful events as cardiac tissue perforation and instrument collisions can be meaningful augmentation to current robot surgery system. AIM: We evaluated whether estimated glomerular filtration rate variability in the general population could be associated with all-cause mortality. METHODS: Health examination data from 7842 individuals aged >20 years who visited for health check-ups at least thrice at ≥6-month intervals between May 1, 1995 and November 30, 2010 were collected. Estimated glomerular filtration rate variability was defined as the coefficient of variation of the estimated glomerular filtration rate, that is, standar
BACKGROUND: Alternative complement pathway dysregulation plays a key role in glomerulonephritis (GN) and is associated with C3 deposition. Herein, we examined pathological and clinical differences between cases of primary GN with C3-dominant (C3D-GN) and nondominant (C3ND-GN) deposition. METHODS: We extracted primary GN data from the Korean GlomeruloNEphritis sTudy (KoGNET). C3D-GN was defined as C3 staining two grades greater than C1q, C4, and immunoglobulin via immunofluorescence analysis. To
Hormones may be key factors driving cancer development, and epidemiological findings suggest that steroid hormones play a crucial role in ovarian tumorigenesis. We demonstrated that high glucocorticoid receptor (GR) expression is associated with a poor prognosis of epithelial ovarian cancer. Recent studies have shown that the GR affects β-arrestin expression, and vice versa. Hence, we assessed the clinical significance of β-arrestin expression in ovarian cancer and determined whether β-arrestin
BACKGROUND: Given the rising awareness of health-related lifestyle modifications, the impact of changes in body weight (BW) on cognitive function and dementia generates significant concern. This study aimed to investigate the association between BW changes and dementia in a middle-aged Korean population. METHODS: A retrospective, population-based longitudinal study was conducted utilizing data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database. Participants aged 40 years or older in 2011
Lichen planus is a common, chronic inflammatory disease of the skin and mucous membrane for which no precise causes have been confirmed. But it is often connected with infections. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) among various bacteria has been associated with the cause of gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. Considering the similarities of histological features between gastric ulcer and oral ulcers, it is resonable to assume that H. pylori might also be involved in the development oral mu
