About the Lab

Professor Johannes Urpelainen's research lab focuses on international environmental governance, climate policy, and the political economy of sustainable development. The lab investigates how states, institutions, and subnational actors navigate global climate cooperation, with particular emphasis on international institutions, non-state and subnational climate action, and the role of gender and decision-making in energy transitions. Research also explores the dynamics of international delegation, institutional design, and the strategic behavior of states in multilateral agreements.

In June 2017, the Trump administration decided to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement, a landmark climate agreement adopted in 2015 by 195 nations. The exit of the US has not just raised concern that the US will miss its domestic emission reduction targets, but also that other parties to the Paris Agreement might backtrack on their initial pledges regarding emission reductions or financial contributions. Here we assess the magnitude of the threat that US non-cooperation poses to the Paris A

The Gendered Nature of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Stove Adoption and Use in Rural India

Clean cooking fuels promise substantial health benefits for rural households, but almost three billion people continue to rely on traditional biomass for their cooking needs. We explore the role of gender in the adoption of LPG, a clean cooking fuel, in rural India. Given that women are responsible for most households' cooking needs, we propose that gender inequality is an obstacle to LPG adoption because men may fail to appreciate the full benefits of clean cooking fuels. Using data for 8,563 h

Unilateral Influence on International Bureaucrats
Johannes Urpelainen
SJR Q1Journal of Conflict Resolution

The conventional wisdom emphasizes agency slack or bias as the central problem of international delegation. I show that the possibility of a unilateral influence contest is equally problematic. States can exert unilateral influence on autonomous international bureaucrats, either through rewards or through punishments, to pursue their particular interests. A costly contest results, so some states could refuse to delegate because they expect others to be too influential. The analysis has four coun
