About the Lab
Professor Jong Hag Choi's research lab focuses on corporate governance, financial reporting, and accounting policy, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between corporate behavior, financial conservatism, and market efficiency. The lab investigates how controlling shareholders influence accounting choices and firm value during both crisis and non-crisis periods, especially in the context of corporate governance mechanisms. It also explores the role of financial reporting standards—such as comprehensive income and net income—in determining executive compensation, earnings predictability, and equity market reactions. Additionally, the lab examines institutional reforms, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and their impact on audit quality and auditor behavior.

11During Toxoplasma gondii infection, macrophages, dendritic cells, and neutrophils are important sources of pro-inflammatory cytokines from the host. To counteract the pro-inflammatory activities, T. gondii is known to have several mechanisms inducing down-regulation of the host immunity. In the present study, we analyzed the production of proand anti-inflammatory cytokines from a human myelomonocytic cell line, THP-1 cells, in response to treatment with T. gondii lysate or lipopolysaccharide (LP
This study investigates whether the tendency for audit clients to engage in opinion shopping becomes weaker after the enforcement of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). While Lennox (2000) provides evidence that U.K. firms successfully engage in opinion shopping, there is limited evidence on the mitigating effect of SOX on opinion shopping. Using observations collected from the period before and after the enforcement of SOX (year 2001, 2004 and 2005), we find that, for our sample period, firms are lik
With the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) now considering the question, we examine 16 different definitions of income across three applications: information content, predictive ability and executive compensation contracting. Our results reveal that comprehensive income defined by FASB Statement 130 (NI130) dominates both traditional net income (NI) and fully comprehensive income (NIbroad) in explaining equity returns, but that NI dominates NI130 and NIbroad in explaining executive
In this paper, we examine how controlling shareholders` expropriation incentives affect the level of conservatism during crisis and non-crisis periods. While previous studies have extensively investigated the link between corporate governance and firmvalue during crisis, not much attention has been given to the link between corporate governance and conservatism during crisis. Extending the recent study which documents a negative relation between the ownership-control wedge and conservatism, we f
