About the Lab
Professor Jong-Il Kim's research spans molecular biology, cancer genetics, and biochemical mechanisms underlying disease and protection. His lab investigates RNA editing in cancer, particularly A-to-I editing in RHOQ transcripts and its impact on RhoQ protein activity and tumor invasion. The lab also explores chemopreventive mechanisms, such as the protective effects of green tea catechins like EGCG against UV-induced skin damage and oxidative stress. Additionally, his work includes enzymatic pathways in natural product biosynthesis, such as the cyclization mechanism in artemisinin precursor formation, and DNA repair systems in extremophilic organisms. These diverse interests converge on understanding molecular mechanisms in disease pathogenesis and chemoprevention.

Full length cDNAs encoding two acetylcholinesterases (AChEs; Bgace1 and Bgace2) were cloned and characterized from the German cockroach, Blattella germanica. Sequence analyses showed that both genes possess all the typical features of ace, and that Bgace1 is orthologous to the insect ace1 whereas Bgace2 is to the insect ace2.
