About the Lab

Professor Jong-Man Kang's research lab specializes in perioperative medicine, with a focus on anesthetic management in patients with complex medical conditions such as Huntington’s disease and ankylosing spondylitis with limited mouth opening. The lab investigates airway management challenges, patient safety, and the integration of advanced monitoring technologies in surgical settings. It also explores the role of anesthesiologists in antibiotic stewardship and the development of telemedicine-enabled health monitoring devices for real-time clinical decision support.

Anesthetic management of a patient with Huntington's chorea -A case report-

SJR Q1Korean journal of anesthesiologyOA

Huntington's chorea is a rare hereditary disorder of the nervous system. It is inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder and is characterized by progressive chorea, dementia and psychiatric disturbances. The best anesthetic technique is yet to be established for these patients with increased risk of aspiration due to involvement of pharyngeal muscles and an exaggerated response to sodium thiopental and succinylcholine. The primary goal in general anesthesia for these patients is to provide air

Airway management of an ankylosing spondylitis patient with severe temporomandibular joint ankylosis and impossible mouth opening
Jong-Man Kang, Kang‐Woo Lee, Dong-Ok Kim, Jae-Woo Yi
SJR Q1Korean journal of anesthesiologyOA

In most cases of surgery requiring general anesthesia, airway management and endotracheal intubation are important procedures that must take place. However, when a patient has ankylosing spondylitis (AS) involving the cervical spine in addition to a temporomandibular joint ankylosis (TMJA), head manipulation is difficult to perform. Also, when a patient has limited mouth opening or is unable to open the mouth altogether, airway management and endotracheal intubation are significantly difficult.

Antibiotics and muscle relaxation
Jong-Man Kang
SJR Q1Korean journal of anesthesiologyOA

Anesthesiologists use quite a few medications during anesthesia of a patient. Those include inhaled anesthetics, intravenous anesthetics, opioids, muscle relaxants, cholinesterase inhibitors, anticholinergic drugs, adrenergic agonists and antagonists, hypotensive agents, local anesthetics, and several adjunct drugs. We are usually well-trained in the administration of these drugs and aware of their actions and side effects. How about antibiotics? The anesthesiologists do not seem to have as much

SJR Q1Korean journal of anesthesiologyOA

The perioperative period is a source of significant fear and anxiety for patients. Therefore, anxiolytic and sedative drugs are administered routinely, before and during surgery [1]. However, a larger dose of sedatives can delay the recovery in the ambulatory setting and be associated with an increased risk for complications.

Pain is one of the most common reasons that people visit medical care facilities. It is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or is described in terms of such damage [1]. Pain is considered a purely subjective experience, but its management should be objective. Pain assessment is the first step in optimal management. Pain assessment should begin with an open-ended statement or question such as Tell me about your pain or Wh

Background The possibility of exposure to specific antibiotics is increased with aging. Especially, if the patient is used specific antibiotics commonly used in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H.P.) to treatment other disease. Therefore, the treatment of H.P. in the elderly could be cautious about drug resistant compared to the young. Aim This study aims to find out the difference of H.P. treatment resistance according to age. Methods The 231 patients were enrolled who were diagnosed H.P

Removal of laryngeal mask airway: awake vs anesthetized
Jong-Man Kang
SJR Q1Korean journal of anesthesiologyOA

Anesthesiologists have been debating on the timing of tracheal extubation (removal of laryngeal mask airway, laryngeal tube, etc.) in children on whether the extubation has to be done while the children are anesthetized or awake. Some studies have shown that removal of airway devices in an anesthetized state was accompanied by less minor respiratory complications such as coughing, hypersalivation and desaturation than in awake [1]. However, the upper airway obstruction after the removal of airwa
