Aspiration for global cultural capital in the stratified realm of global higher education: why do Korean students go to US graduate schools?
Jong‐Young Kim
SJR Q1British Journal of Sociology of Education

This study aims to understand Korean students’ motivations for studying in US graduate schools. For this purpose, I conducted in‐depth interviews with 50 Korean graduate students who were enrolled in a research‐centered US university at the time of the interview. In these interviews, I sought to understand how their motivations are connected not only with their family, school, and occupational backgrounds, but also with the stratification of global higher education. Theoretically, this paper att

Thermal and Electronic Properties of Exfoliated Metal Chalcogenides
Jong‐Young Kim, Soon‐Mok Choi, Won‐Seon Seo, Woo‐Seok Cho
SJR Q2Bulletin of the Korean Chemical SocietyOA

The thermal conductivity of layered metal chalcogenides such as <TEX>$MT_2$</TEX> (M = Mo, W; T = S, Se) shows a marked decrease after exfoliation and subsequent restacking process. Random stacking of two-dimensional crystalline sheets circumvents thermal conduction pathways along a longitudinal direction, which results in a reduction in thermal conductivity. <TEX>$WS_2$</TEX> and <TEX>$WSe_2$</TEX> compounds retain p-type conducting behavior after exfoliation and restacking with decreased elect

[(Th2F5)(NC7H5O4)2(H2O)][NO3]: An Actinide−Organic Open Framework
Jong‐Young Kim, Alexander J. Norquist, Dermot O’Hare
SJR Q1Journal of the American Chemical Society

We believe [(Th2F5)(NC7H5O4)2(H2O)][NO3] is the first three-dimensionally connected, actinide-organic framework solid. The structure is composed of thorium oxyfluoride chains, each of which connected to pyridinedicarboxylate groups to give a 3D cross-linked network with cavities containing nitrate anions.

The Birth of Academic Subalterns
Jong‐Young Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Studies in International Education

This study analyzes the learning and cultural experiences of Korean graduate students in the United States. Based on 50 qualitative interviews, the study focuses on how global knowledge and the power relations of language determine their education in a transnational system. At a theoretical level, the study criticizes both the functionalist approaches that limit analysis to socialization processes and the pragmatic analyses that seek to solve problems of adaptation. Rejecting these perspectives,

Social Interaction in Computer‐Mediated Communication
Jong‐Young Kim
Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science and Technology

As a doctoral student at the University of Illinois, I have been studying the sociology of science technology. One of main themes in the field is how society and technoscience co-produce each other generating a new assemblage among heterogeneous factors and forces. In the field of sociology cyberspace is increasingly viewed as a locus in which social life and interaction achieve new meanings and patterns. For the past 20 years computer-mediated communication (CMC) researchers have tried to under
