About the Lab
Professor Jonghan Kim's research lab specializes in translational biomedical research, focusing on molecular mechanisms of protein transport and drug metabolism, particularly involving the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) and its role in extending the half-life of therapeutic proteins like IgG and albumin. The lab also investigates pharmacokinetics and first-pass metabolism of novel drugs, as well as clinical applications in oncology, including biomarker discovery for gastric cancer peritoneal metastasis. Additionally, the lab explores advanced image processing techniques, such as region-based wavelet transforms and multi-exposure image fusion, for medical imaging enhancement and diagnostic support. These interdisciplinary efforts bridge molecular biology, pharmacology, and biomedical imaging to improve therapeutic outcomes and diagnostic accuracy.

15FcRn, a nonclassical MHC-I protein bound to beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2m), diverts IgG and albumin from an intracellular degradative fate, prolonging the half-lives of both. While knockout mouse strains lacking either FcRn-alpha-chain (AK) or beta 2m (BK) show much shorter half-lives of IgG and albumin than normal mice, the plasma IgG half-life in the BK and AK strains is different, being shorter in the BK strain. Since beta 2m does not affect the IgG production rate, we tested whether an addit
Since low bioavailability of YJA-20379-8 (3-butyryl-4-[5-R-(+)-methylbenzylamino]-8ethoxy-1,7-naph thy ridine), a new reversible proton pump inhibitor, has been reported after oral administration of the drug to rats, the first-pass organ of the drug was investigated in rats. YJA-20379-8, 50 mg kg(-1), was infused over 1 min via the jugular vein (n=5) or the portal vein (n=5), or was instilled directly into the stomach (n=5) or the duodenum (n=5). After intravenous or intraportal infusion of the
We herein describe a case of cystic lymphangioma in the greater omentum of the remnant stomach, which is thought it to be related with subtotal gastrectomy 10 yr ago for early gastric cancer. A 76-yr-old man was admitted to our department with postprandial abdominal discomfort and bowel habit change. Intraabdominal multilocular cystic mass was detected by ultrasonography and computed tomography. We performed a complete En-bloc tumor resection including spleen and distal pancreas, and histologica
Wavelet transform is not applicable to the arbitrarily shaped region (or object) in images, due to the nature of its global decomposition. In order to solve this problem, the region-based wavelet transform (RWT) is proposed and its computational complexity is examined in this brief. It is shown that the RWT requires significantly fewer computations than conventional wavelet transform, since the RWT processes only the object region in the original image. Experimental results show that any arbitra
Multi-exposure image fusion is an effective method for fusing differently exposed low dynamic range (LDR) images to a high dynamic range (HDR) image. The previous methods suffer from poor detail and color restoration performance and visual artifact, such as halo. In this paper, to overcome these problems, we propose a novel network architecture for multi-exposure image fusion (MEF) based on feature decomposition and RGB channel fusion. A feature of LDR image is decomposed to the common and resid
Purpose Recent studies have investigated intraperitoneal paclitaxel (IP PTX) combined with systemic chemotherapy for the treatment of gastric cancer peritoneal metastases (GCPM). This clinical trial integrated translational study was conducted to identify biomarkers that can predict patient responses to IP PTX plus systemic systemic S-1 plus oxaliplatin (SOX) chemotherapy. Materials and methods Patients from the PIPS-GC phase Ib/II clinical trial, enrolled at the Korea University Guro Hospital,
Multi-exposure image fusion is an effective algorithm for fusing differently exposed low dynamic range (LDR) images to a high dynamic range (HDR) images. In this study, a novel network architecture for multi-exposure image fusion (MEF) based on feature decomposition is proposed. The conventional MEF methods are weak for restoring detail and color, and they suffer from visual artifacts. To overcome these challenges, a feature of each LDR image is decomposed to the common and residual components a
Peritoneal seeding is the most prevalent and grave form of metastatic gastric cancer (GC), and is a poor prognostic factor that is unresponsive to conventional systemic chemotherapy.Peritoneal metastasis (PM) in GC can be treated using several methods, including systemic chemotherapy, intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy, and cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic IP chemotherapy for treating PM in GC.Diverse treatment outcomes of IP chemotherapy for GC with PM have been reported. Therefore, compre
