About the Lab
Professor Jongmin Kim's research lab specializes in advanced materials and sustainable energy technologies, with a strong focus on graphene-based nanomaterials for photovoltaic applications and energy conversion. The lab also investigates environmental engineering solutions, particularly in wastewater treatment using innovative anaerobic-aerobic digestion systems. Additionally, the lab explores bioactive natural products, especially black sesame extracts, for neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing effects in preclinical models. These diverse research directions reflect a commitment to addressing global challenges in energy, environment, and health through interdisciplinary science and engineering.

15A combined anaerobic/aerobic sludge digestion system was studied to determine the effect of aerobic solids retention time (SRT) on its solids and nitrogen removal efficiencies. After the anaerobic digester reached steady state, effluent from the anaerobic digester was fed to aerobic digesters that were operated at 2- to 5-day SRTs. The anaerobic system was fed with a mixture of primary and secondary sludge from a local municipal wastewater treatment plant. Both systems were fed once per a day. T
Previous studies have shown that learner individual differences have important impacts on L2 accuracy development. The present study examines a learner variable (i.e. extraversion versus introversion) and its effects on incidental focus on form. Twenty-eight ESL students in two classes (an advanced and an upper-intermediate class) and their teacher participated in the study. Data were collected through classroom observation over 7 weeks (for a total of 16 hours) and background and personality tr
Similarity plays a critical role in many judgments and choices. Traditional models of similarity posit that increasing the number of differences between objects cannot increase judged similarity between them. In contrast to these previous models, the present research shows that introducing a small difference in an attribute that previously was identical across objects can increase perceived similarity between those objects. We propose an explanation based on the idea that small differences draw
Graphene/silver nanowires (Ag NWs)-doped graphene stacks are employed for Si Schottky-junction solar cells as transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs). The doping of graphene by Ag NWs decreases the series resistance of the solar cells and enhances the electrical conductivity of the graphene TCEs, resulting in remarkable improvements of the diode properties of the solar cells. In addition, the Ag NWs on the graphene reduces the reflectance of the solar cells as well as the transmittance of the g
Observations of sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) by remote sensing have improved our understanding of the structural and physiological dynamics of vegetation. Substantial efforts have been made to measure SIF with ground-based sensing systems, but field observation data for various plant functional types are still sparse. This is partly due to the limited availability of commercial SIF measurement systems, the relatively high cost of hyperspectral spectroradiometers, and the difficulti
Black sesame (Sesami semen nigrum) has been used to treat dizziness, earnoise, constipation in the traditional Chinese medicine. In the present study, we assessed memory enhancing properties of 70% ethanolic extract of black sesame (EBS70) and its ameliorating activities on learning and memory impairments induced by scopolamine. Drug-induced amnesia was made by scopolamine treatment (1 mg/kg, i.p.). Single EBS70 (200 mg/kg, p.o.) administration significantly enhanced cognitive function and atten
Cellulose to lignin ratio is one of the widely used indicators of degree of landfill stabilization. This ratio shows the amount of carbohydrate or cellulose consumed by anaerobes compared to relatively inert lignin. However, the method of lignin measurement contains an intrinsic error. Plastics are contained in the landfill samples and these are characterized as lignaceous materials due to their acid-insolubility. Lignin is typically measured as the organic residue that is acid insoluble but is
