About the Lab

Professor Joon Chul Jung's research lab specializes in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, with a focus on pediatric cardiac surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and complex aortic interventions. The lab investigates surgical outcomes, risk factors for complications such as acute kidney injury, and long-term results in patients with congenital heart disease, aortic pathologies, and soft tissue sarcomas. Key research directions include optimizing surgical approaches for aortic arch repair, evaluating hybrid endovascular techniques for thoracic aortic diseases, and improving postoperative follow-up protocols. The lab also examines the impact of global health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, on vascular surgical care delivery.

OBJECTIVES: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common after paediatric cardiac surgery and associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Aortic arch surgery may be an independent risk factor for AKI because of circulatory arrest below the descending thoracic artery during anastomosis. We investigated the surgical outcomes associated with AKI after aortic arch repair in paediatric patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 120 paediatric patients who underwent aortic arch repair between 2003 a

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery versus Conventional Median Sternotomy for Atrial Septal Defect Closure
Joon Chul Jung, Kyung Hwan Kim
The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: Median sternotomy is the standard approach for atrial septal defect (ASD) closure. However, minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) has been introduced at many centers in adult/grown-up congenital heart patients. We retrospectively reviewed the results of right anterolateral thoracotomy compared with conventional median sternotomy (CMS) for ASD closure at Seoul National University Hospital. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 60 adult patients who underwent isolated ASD closure fr

Clinical Outcomes of Surgical Treatment for Primary Chest Wall Soft Tissue Sarcoma
Seung Hwan Yoon, Joon Chul Jung, In Kyu Park, Samina Park, Chang Hyun Kang, Young Tae Kim
The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the clinical outcomes of surgical treatment of primary chest wall soft tissue sarcoma (CW-STS). METHODS: Thirty-one patients who underwent surgery for CW-STS between 2000 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. The disease-free and overall survival rates were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and prognostic factors were analyzed using a Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: The median follow-up duration was 65.6 months. The most common histologic typ

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on acute and elective thoracic and abdominal aortic procedures. METHODS: Forty departments shared their data on acute and elective thoracic and abdominal aortic procedures between January and May 2020 and January and May 2019 in Europe, Asia and the USA. Admission rates as well as delay from onset of symptoms to referral were compared. RESULTS: No differences in the number of acute thoracic and abdominal aorti

Isolated Congenital Left Ventricular Diverticulum in Adults
Joon Chul Jung, Hong Chul Oh, Kyung Hwan Kim
The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryOA

Isolated congenital left ventricular diverticulum is a rare cardiac malformation. Here, we report the case of a 33-year-old woman who had suffered from recurrent transient ischemic attacks for 6 years. Preoperative cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography angiography revealed a diverticulum near the apex. The diverticulum was successfully obliterated by cardiopulmonary bypass. We suggest that isolated congenital left ventricular diverticulum can be easily corrected with a low s

Zone 2 hybrid thoracic endovascular aortic repair: Is it a good option for all types of thoracic aortic disease?
Bongyeon Sohn, Jae Hang Lee, Joon Chul Jung, Hyoung Woo Chang, Dong Jung Kim, Jun Sung Kim, Cheong Lim, Kay‐Hyun Park
SJR Q2Journal of Cardiothoracic SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: Zone 2 thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is performed for the treatment of various thoracic aortic diseases involving the left subclavian artery. This study aimed to analyze the late clinical outcomes of zone 2 hybrid TEVAR according to the various indications. METHODS: A total of 48 patients who underwent zone 2 TEVAR at our institution between December, 2010 and July, 2020 were enrolled. The indications were aortic aneurysm (AA, n = 15), acute type B aortic dissection (AD

OBJECTIVES: After performing descending thoracic or thoraco-abdominal aorta replacement for chronic aortic dissection, the fate of the remaining dissected aorta, without significant enlargement, is not well known. This study aimed to investigate the changes in the remaining aorta and the risk factors for late composite aortic events. METHODS: In 98 patients with chronic type A or B aortic dissection who underwent descending thoracic or thoraco-abdominal aorta replacement, the immediate postopera

Elevated troponin I is associated with a worse long-term prognosis in patients undergoing beating-heart coronary surgery

SJR Q1European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery

OBJECTIVES: The impacts of elevated troponin I levels after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on long-term outcomes were investigated. METHODS: A total of 996 patients who underwent elective isolated CABG for stable or unstable angina were enrolled. Patients were divided into higher and lower groups based on 80th percentile postoperative peak troponin I (ppTnI) levels. The relationship between ppTnI and long-term clinical outcomes was analysed. RESULTS: The median ppTnI was 1.55 (2.74) ng/m

SJR Q2Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic SurgeryOA

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in aortic growth rate and factors influencing aneurysmal dilatation after uncomplicated acute type B aortic dissection (ABAD). METHODS: Medically treated patients with uncomplicated ABAD between September 2004 and January 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Diameters of 6 different sites in the descending aorta were measured and aortic growth rate was calculated according to the time interval. Factors associated with aneurysmal changes we

An Unusual Presentation of Schwannoma in the Interatrial Space
Joon Chul Jung, Hyoung Woo Chang, Kyung Hwan Kim
The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryOA

We report the case of a 69-year-old woman who was diagnosed with intracardiac schwannoma without symptoms. Preoperative echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging showed a mass attached to the interatrial septum. The initial diagnosis was a myxoma or a bronchogenic cyst. The tumor was successfully excised under cardiopulmonary bypass. However, the pathology of the excised tumor was consistent with schwannoma. We suggest that cardiovascular surgeons consider schwannoma to be a possib
