About the Lab
Professor Joon Seong Park's research lab specializes in clinical and translational oncology, with a focus on gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers. The lab investigates treatment strategies, prognostic factors, and molecular mechanisms underlying diseases such as hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic cancer, and ampulla of Vater carcinoma. Key research directions include the impact of therapeutic modalities on metastatic disease, the role of biomarkers like LOXL2 in cancer progression, and surgical outcomes with innovative techniques such as TachoSil patch use in pancreatectomy. The lab also explores nutritional support strategies in postoperative recovery, particularly early enteral feeding after pancreatic surgery.

15Current approaches to access control on the Web servers do not scale to enterprise-wide systems because they are mostly based on individual user identities. Hence we were motivated by the need to manage and enforce the strong and efficient RBAC access control technology in large-scale Web environments. To satisfy this requirement, we identify two different architectures for RBAC on the Web, called user-pull and server-pull . To demonstrate feasibility, we implement each architecture by integrati
PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the effect of each therapeutic modality to clarify the treatment strategy for adrenal metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Adrenal metastasis from HCC was observed in 45 patients. Fifteen patients who were determined to have multi-organ metastasis including the adrenal glands were excluded, and the remaining 30 patients were reviewed. RESULTS: The location of adrenal metastasis was right side, left side, and both in 17, 9, and 4 patients,
The benefits of early enteral feeding (EEN) have been demonstrated in gastrointestinal surgery. But, the impact of EEN has not been elucidated yet. We assessed the postoperative nutritional status of patients who had undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) according to the postoperative nutritional method and compared the clinical outcomes of two methods. A prospective randomized trial was undertaken following PD. Patients were randomly divided into two groups; the EEN group received the postoper
BACKGROUND: We performed a prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled study to investigate the clinical outcomes, including postoperative pancreatic fistulas (POPF), after using the TachoSil® patch in distal pancreatectomy (NCT01550406). METHODS: Between June 2012 and September 2014, 101 patients at five centers were randomized into Control (n = 53) and TachoSil (n = 48) groups. In all patients, the pancreas was resected using a stapler with Endo-GIA™ staples. The TachoSil patch was wrapped
BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater has a relatively higher resection rate, lower recurrence rate, and more favorable prognosis than other malignant tumors of the periampullary region. Because of the relative low incidence of carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater, there have been few reports on the patterns and risk factors of recurrence after curative resection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the patterns and risk factors of recurrence after curative resection of ampulla of Vater c
Lysyl oxidase-like 2 (LOXL2) is associated with invasiveness and metastasis in cancer. We analyzed the prognostic impact of LOXL2 in pancreatic cancer patients and investigated the role of LOXL2 in pancreatic cancer cell lines. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed in samples from 80 patients and showed LOXL2 expression in 81.2% of patients with pancreatic cancer. Regarding recurrence patterns, LOXL2-positive tumors showed a significantly higher rate of distant recurrence. The 1-year and 3-
Pancreatic cancer is a lethal disease, and resistance to chemotherapy is a critical factor influencing the postoperative prognosis. Tumour heterogeneity is an important indicator of chemoresistance. Therefore, we analysed tumour heterogeneity in preoperative computed tomography scans by performing texture analysis using the grey-level run-length matrix and analysed the correlation of survival with the value obtained in these analyses. We analysed 116 consecutive patients who underwent curative r
Bi-directional buck-boost DC/DC converter is normally utilized for high speed operation of motors for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). In this work, a dual inverter strategy is proposed for HEV motor with the purpose of accommodating high speed operation without increasing battery voltage. By setting the secondary inverter to take care of only reactive voltage component, the secondary inverter do not carry voltage source other than capacitor bank. DC link voltage regulation is achieved through th
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) shows poor prognosis and high malignancy due to the presence of cancer-initiating cells (CICs) and characteristics of the tumor microenvironment (TME). Organoids are useful for studying PDAC, and establishing organoids is dependent on stem cell growth factors, including Wnt signaling. Herein, using a conventional organoid culture system, we demonstrated that CD44(+)CD24(+) and CD44(+)CD24(+)EpCAM(+) CICs were enriched >65% in a PDAC patient-derived organoi
In this study, obesity-related factors (BMI, waist size, thigh circumference, and cholesterol, LDL, and HDL levels) correlated with GB disease in the young generation of Korea.
Pancreatic cancer is characterized by a poor prognosis, with its five-year survival rate lower than that of any other cancer type. Gemcitabine, a standard treatment for pancreatic cancer, often has poor outcomes for patients as a result of chemoresistance. Therefore, novel therapeutic targets must be identified to overcome gemcitabine resistance. Here, we found that SLC38A5, a glutamine transporter, is more highly overexpressed in gemcitabine-resistant patients than in gemcitabine-sensitive pati
Since laparoscopic liver resection was first introduced in 2001, Korean surgeons have chosen a laparoscopic procedure as one of the treatment options for benign or malignant liver disease. We distributed and analyzed a nationwide questionnaire to members of the Korean Laparoscopic Liver Surgery Study Group (KLLSG) in order to evaluate the current status of laparoscopic liver resection in Korea. Questionnaires were sent to 24 centers of KLLSG. The questionnaire consisted of operative procedure, h
