About the Lab

Professor Young Kyu Ju's research lab specializes in structural engineering with a focus on innovative lateral load-resisting systems for high-rise buildings. The lab investigates advanced structural systems such as diagrid and buckling-restrained bracing (BRB) systems, emphasizing constructability, seismic resilience, and energy dissipation. It also explores vibration control technologies like tuned liquid dampers (TLDs) and innovative composite floor systems to enhance serviceability and reduce dynamic serviceability issues. The lab combines experimental testing, numerical analysis, and performance-based design to develop practical, cost-effective solutions for modern tall buildings.

Cyclic Behavior of Diagrid Nodes with H-Section Braces
Young Ju Kim, In-Yong Jung, Young‐Kyu Ju, Soon-Jeon Park, Sang-Dae Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Structural Engineering

In recent years, the number of tall buildings being constructed has been rapidly increasing worldwide. Some buildings have been constructed with triangular exterior structural members, known as diagrid systems, which have been developed for structural effectiveness and architectural aesthetics. Although more buildings with diagrid systems have been proposed and have been entered in design competitions, few studies have been carried out on the behavior of diagrid systems or diagrid nodes. Most im

Structural Performance of Steel-Concrete Composite Column Subjected to Axial and Flexural Loading
Myoung-Ho Oh, Young‐Kyu Ju, Myeong-Han Kim, Sang-Dae Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Asian Architecture and Building EngineeringOA

The steel-concrete composite column is a new composite member that can achieve constructability and economy by filling the empty space in the steel H-flange with concrete. Even before this study was conducted, it had been proven in another study on the axial capacity of a steel-concrete composite column that the steel-concrete composite column with a non-compact section has excellent structural strength. Further studies on flexural-compressive capacity are necessary, though, due to the structura

Structural behaviour of water sloshing damper with embossments subject to random excitation
Young‐Kyu Ju
SJR Q3Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering

To improve the serviceability of tall buildings, several types of vibration control systems have been developed. The tuned liquid damper (TLD) has advantages, such as simple adjustment of natural frequency, easy installation, and low maintenance. Since water tanks at the top of tall buildings can be directly modeled as a TLD system, it is more practical than any other vibration control system in Korea. Since most of the tanks in Korea have embossments on the wall, the structural characteristics

Dynamic Characteristic of Composite Beam using the Sandwich Plate System
Jaeho Ryu, Young‐Kyu Ju, Sung-Won Yoon
Journal of the Korean Association for Spatial Structures

To improve the noise and vibration problems of the existing public parking systems, new floor system was proposed. This system consists of the Sandwich Plate System(SPS), steel beam and post-tensioned steel tendons. To verify the dynamic characteristics such as the natural frequency and damping ratio of the system, the free vibration test was performed. Test results showed that the natural frequency of the SPS composite beam was 23.8Hz and it was increased by 3.8% by installing the post-tensione

A modified dynamic inelastic analysis of tall buildings considering changes of dynamic characteristics
Sang-Dae Kim, Won‐Kee Hong, Young‐Kyu Ju
The Structural Design of Tall Buildings

Pushover analysis is commonly used to evaluate the inelastic ultimate capacity of structures. However, pushover analysis is carried out based on constant distributions throughout the incremental analysis, which cannot capture the variation in the acceleration profile due to inelastic behavior. For this reason, when plastic hinges form in structure, constant distributions of lateral forces cannot be used any longer. Conventional dynamic inelastic method by time-history analysis can be used for sp

비좌굴 가새의 무보강 길이에 따른 이력거동 평가
김명한, 김상대, 박대진, 주영규, 김도현

This study proposes a numerical analysis model whose behavior was analytically repeatable in an actual BRBs. Moreover, the result of the FEA was compared with the result of the existing component capacity test. In addition, six models were proposed, whose unconstrained area varied in length. The unconstrained area whose length proved most efficient was proposed using the verified analytical method to analyze the core's performance, depending on the unconstrained length, among various parameters

Evaluation of seismic performance factors for steel DIAGRID structural system design
Dongkyu Lee, Soomi Shin, Young‐Kyu Ju
SJR Q3Earthquakes and Structures

This article presents a proposed analytical methodology to determine seismic force-resisting system R-values for steel diagrid framed systems. As current model building codes do not explicitly address the seismic design performance factors for this new and emerging structural system, the purpose of this study is to provide a sound and reliable basis for defining such seismic design parameters. An approach and methodology for the reliable determination of seismic performance factors for use in th

Corrugated web beams for buildings can be used without stiffeners and have higher shear strength than flat webs because of the inclined folds. So far, corrugated web beams are usually combined with PC bridges. Due to thin webs, shear failure of most of the corrugated web beams occurs by shear buckling. Failure modes of the corrugated web beams are complicated; yielding, shear buckling, interaction between the yielding and buckling. Previous researches have been investigating the failure mode of

CNN-Based Ti-6242 Impeller Forging Process Design for Uniform Strain Distribution
Kyungmin Kim, Yosep Kim, Young‐Kyu Ju, In-Su Son, Naksoo Kim
SJR Q2Applied SciencesOA

In this study, we propose a systematic process design method using a convolutional neural network (CNN) for the uniform strain distribution of a Ti-6242 impeller during forging. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is a machine learning algorithm optimized for processing grid-like data, such as images, by identifying patterns within the data. To achieve the design goal with a simple process, we propose a methodological process in which the initial billet passes through three steps: upsetting, pr

Buckling-Restrained Brace is composed of brace core and constraining member for the purpose of restraing the buckling of brace and providing large inelastic deformation of the member. Constraining member such as steel tube wrap around the brace core prevents the buckling of brace core by means of its flexural resistance, and makes sure that the brace members dissipate a large quantity of energy and form stabilized hysteresis behavior. In this study, to examine the component capacity of the buckl
