About the Lab
Professor Juhwan Kim's research lab focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying cancer progression and neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular emphasis on signal transduction pathways in lymphoma, lung cancer metastasis, and spinocerebellar ataxia. The lab investigates therapeutic resistance in hematologic malignancies, including the role of PI3K and B-cell receptor signaling pathways, and explores viral oncoproteins such as EBV LMP1 in lymphomagenesis. Key research directions include identifying resistance mechanisms, modulating glial and immune responses, and uncovering transcriptional regulators like Egr-1 and NF-κB in disease pathogenesis. The lab integrates molecular biology, genomics, and translational approaches to develop novel therapeutic strategies.

15OBJECTIVE: The implantation of cancer cells in the chest wall after percutaneous needle biopsy of the lung is rare. We investigated the clinical outcomes of implantation metastasis after percutaneous fine-needle aspiration biopsy of pulmonary mass suggestive of lung cancer. METHODS: Between January 1990 and December 2001, nine patients were treated for implantation metastasis of the chest wall. We retrospectively reviewed the patients' records and analyzed their clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Durin
Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) is a fatal, dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disease caused by the expansion of CAG repeats in the Ataxin-1 (ATXN1) gene. SCA1 is characterized by balance and coordination deficits due to the predominant loss of Purkinje neurons in the cerebellum. We previously demonstrated that cerebellar astrogliosis beings during the early stages of SCA1, prior to onset of motor deficits and loss of Purkinje neurons. We communicate here that cerebellar astrogliosis c
BACKGROUND: The phosphoinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway is associated with poor prognosis of hematologic malignancies, providing a strong rationale for the use of PI3K inhibitors in the treatment of malignant lymphoma. However, development of resistance limits the use of PI3K inhibitors in lymphoma patients. METHODS: We established copanlisib (pan-PI3K inhibitor)-resistant B-cell lymphoma and duvelisib (PI3Kδ and -γ inhibitor)-resistant T-cell lymphoma cell lines. The cytokine array and the phos
Blockage of B cell receptor signaling with ibrutinib presents a promising clinical approach for treatment of B-cell malignancies. However, many patients show primary resistance to the drug or develop secondary resistance. In the current study, cDNA microarray and Western blot analyses revealed CD79B upregulation in the activated B cell-like diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (ABC-DLBCL) that display differential resistance to ibrutinib. CD79B overexpression was sufficient to induce resistance to ibru
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded latent membrane protein-1 (LMP1) is a transmembrane protein essential for EBV-induced immortalization and transformation of B cells. Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) triggers somatic hypermutation and recombination, in turn contributing to lymphomagenesis. Here, we report an intracellular mechanism by which LMP1 contributes to B cell lymphomagenesis via AID expression. In our experiments, LMP1 increased AID mRNA expression and promoter activity. The AI
To investigate the effect of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) on human cancer cells, we sought to identify and analyze potential target genes that were differentially expressed in the presence and absence of LMP1. Our cDNA microarray analysis revealed that expression of early growth response gene-1 (Egr-1) was increased by LMP1 expression in MCF7 and Jurkat cells. An NFkappaB inhibitor (SN50) antagonized LMP1-induced enhancement of Egr-1 expression, indicating that LMP1

To investigate the effect of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) on human cancer cells, we sought to identify and analyse potential target genes that were differentially expressed in the presence and absence of LMP1. LMP1 upregulated the expression of SNARK compared with the empty vector transfected control cells, which was confirmed by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Cytotoxicity assay showed that SNARK expression increased drug resistance in response to d
An increasing number of pathogenic variants in presynaptic proteins involved in the synaptic vesicle cycle are being discovered in neurodevelopmental disorders. The clinical features of these synaptic vesicle cycle disorders are diverse, but the most prevalent phenotypes include intellectual disability, epilepsy, movement disorders, cerebral visual impairment, and psychiatric symptoms ( Verhage and Sørensen, 2020; Bonnycastle et al., 2021; John et al., 2021; Melland et al., 2021).
Saccular cysts can be managed endoscopically using CO2 laser, without requiring an external approach. Therefore, an endoscopic approach should be actively considered for an optimal treatment outcome.
ADM implantation can effectively reduce the occurrence of Frey's syndrome, infra-auricular depressed deformity, and first bite syndrome after parotidectomy. ADM may be especially advantageous in complex parotidectomy cases when significant complications are expected.
