About the Lab

Professor Juhyeon Lim's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases, with a strong emphasis on gastric cancer, Helicobacter pylori infection, and their long-term health implications. The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms linking H. pylori to gastric carcinogenesis, particularly through epigenetic changes such as miRNA methylation, and explores the role of aging and obesity in gastric cancer progression. Using large-scale national health databases, the lab conducts epidemiological and clinical studies to evaluate risk factors, treatment outcomes, and long-term survival in elderly and high-risk populations.

Thirty-day mortality after percutaneous gastrostomy by endoscopic versus radiologic placement: a systematic review and meta-analysis

SJR Q2Intestinal ResearchOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: A percutaneous gastrostomy can be placed either endoscopically (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, PEG) or radiologically (radiologically-inserted gastrostomy, RIG). However, there is no consistent evidence of the safety and efficacy of PEG compared to RIG. Recently, 30-day mortality has become considered as the most important surrogate index for evaluating the safety and efficacy of percutaneous gastrostomy. The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare the 30-day mortality ra

Recent studies have suggested that Helicobacter pylori could prevent allergic disease, particularly in children. However, whether this is true in adults is controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is negative association between H. pylori infection and asthma among adults in an area with a high prevalence of H. pylori. This was a cross-sectional study using 2011 health surveillance data. Blood samples were taken from all participants to measure serum H. pylori IgG sta

Clinicopathological Features and Surgical Safety of Gastric Cancer in Elderly Patients
Joo Hyun Lim, Dong Ho Lee, Cheol Min Shin, Nayoung Kim, Young Soo Park, Hyun Chae Jung, In Sung Song
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers, especially among the elderly. However little is known about gastric cancer in elderly patients. This study was designed to evaluate the specific features of gastric cancer in elderly patients. Medical records of 1,107 patients who had radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer between June 2005 and December 2009 were reviewed. They were divided into young (<65 yr, n=676), young-old (65-74 yr, n=332), and old-old age group (≥75 yr, n=99). Increased CA

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between insomnia and the risk of various cancers using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent a national health examination in 2009 were followed-up until 2018. Newly-diagnosed cancers were collected one year after the baseline. Insomnia was defined as having a diagnosis of F510 or G470 within one year prior to enrollment. The incidence of various cancers was compared between patients with and w

This result suggests H. pylori eradication could reverse methylation-silencing of miR-133a which is involved in H. pylori-induced gastric carcinogenesis.

SJR Q1Cancer Research and TreatmentOA

PURPOSE: There remains controversy about relationship between obesity and gastric cancer. We aimed to examine the association using obesity-persistence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed a nationwide population-based cohort which underwent health check-up between 2009 and 2012. Among them, those who had annual examinations during the last 5 years were selected. Gastric cancer risk was compared between those without obesity during the 5 years (never-obesity group) and those with obesity diagnosi

SJR Q1Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In East Asia, colonic diverticulosis develops most commonly in the right colon and is known to have different characteristics compared with left-sided one. This study was designed to investigate whether right-colonic diverticulosis is associated with posteriori dietary patterns. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of prospectively collected cohort that received health check-up in Korea between May 2011 and January 2012. SJR Q1Gut and LiverOA

Common bile duct (CBD) cancer is a relatively rare malignancy that arises from the biliary epithelium and is associated with a poor prognosis. Here, we report a case of advanced metastatic CBD cancer successfully treated by chemotherapy with gemcitabine combined with S-1 (tegafur+gimeracil+oteracil). A 65-year-old male presented with pyogenic liver abscess. After antibiotic therapy and percutaneous drainage, follow-up computed tomography (CT) showed an enhanced nodule in the CBD. Biopsy was perf
