About the Lab
Professor Jun Hee Kim's research lab focuses on the cellular and synaptic mechanisms underlying neural circuit function, with a central emphasis on the role of myelination in neuronal excitability, action potential precision, and synaptic transmission. The lab investigates how myelin loss—particularly in genetic models like the Long-Evans Shaker rat—affects action potential dynamics, synaptic connectivity, and neural processing in the auditory and cerebellar systems. Using electrophysiological, imaging, and molecular approaches, the lab explores the interplay between axonal ion channels, myelin integrity, and activity-dependent signaling in oligodendrocytes. Their work reveals critical roles for myelin in maintaining temporal fidelity of neural signaling and in regulating neuronal network excitability.
