About the Lab
Professor Junho Choe's research lab focuses on psychobiological and psychosocial aspects of mental health, with a strong emphasis on depression, trauma-related psychological outcomes, and the neurobiological mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders. The lab investigates the interplay between psychological factors—such as self-esteem, narcissism, and resilience—and biological markers, including TGF-β1 and Bcl-xL protein expression, particularly in the context of substance use disorders and antidepressant treatments. Research spans clinical, molecular, and behavioral levels, integrating psychiatric epidemiology, psychopharmacology, and molecular neuroscience to advance evidence-based mental health care in Korea and beyond.

15Our study aimed to examine the knowledge and attitude of nursing personnel toward depression in general hospitals of Korea. A total of 851 nursing personnel enrolled at four university-affiliated general hospitals completed self-report questionnaires. Chi-square tests were used to compare the knowledge and attitude of registered or assistant nurses toward depression. In addition, binary logistic regression analysis was used to adjust for the following confounders: age-group and workplace. Regist
Purpose: This study investigated the mental health status, self-esteem, social comparison, and narcissism among medical school students. In addition, the mediational effect of social comparison between self-esteem and narcissism was also tested with regard to whether the students compared themselves with others to enhance their own self-esteem. Methods: Data were collected from 427 medical school students at a medical school in Seoul. The questionnaire included the Minnesota Multiphasic Personal
Ethanol and its metabolite acetaldehyde increase transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-β1) expression in animal studies. TGF-β1 is related with the hepatic stellate cell (the key element of hepatic fibrogenesis) and the radial glia (the key element of neuronal migration). Blood samples were collected from 41 patients with alcohol dependence, TGF-β1 levels measured by ELISA were compared with 41 normal subjects. Plasma TGF-β1 levels in the patients with alcohol dependence (1,653.11 ±532.45 pg/mL)
Objective To analyze both differentially expressed genes and the Bcl-xL protein expression after acute and chronic treatment with fluoxetine in rat C6 glioma cells. Methods C6 glioma cells were cultured for 24 h or 72 h after treatment with 10 μM fluoxetine, and gene expression patterns were observed using microarray and qRT-PCR. Then, cells were cultured for 6 h, 24 h, 72 h or 96 h after treatment with 10 μM fluoxetine, and the expression of Bcl-xL protein was measured using western blot. Resul
This paper aims to introduce, summarize, and emphasize the importance of the ‘Evidence-Based, Pharmacological Treatment Guideline for Depression in Korea, Revised Edition’. Theguideline broadly covers most aspects of the pharmacological treatment of patients inKorea diagnosed with moderate to severe major depression according to the DSM-IV TR. The guideline establishment process involved determining and answering a number of keyquestions, searching and selecting publications, evaluating recommen
Stress and trauma research has traditionally focused on the negative sequela of adversity. Recently, research has begun to focus on positive outcomes, specifically posttraumatic growth (PTG)–“positive change experienced as a result of the struggle with trauma”–which emphasizes the transformative potential of one’s experiences with highly stressful events and circumstances. For evaluation of PTG, resilience is very important. Resilience refers to a person’s ability to successfully adapt to acute
Language disorganization, an objective component of formal thought process abnormality, has been regarded as a core symptomof schizophrenia from an evolutionary psychopathology perspective. However, to the best of our knowledge, the network structureof language disorganization has rarely been examined in patients with schizophrenia. Thus, our preliminary study aimed to evaluatethe network structure using the Clinical Language Disorder Rating Scale (CLANG) in 167 inpatients with schizophrenia. Al
Objective: Our study aimed to measure inter-rater and test-retest reliability, concurrent and convergent validity, and factor solutions of the Korean version of the Clinical Language Disorder Rating Scale (CLANG). Methods: The Korean version of the CLANG for assessing thought, language, and communication, the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Young Mania Rating Scale, and Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia were used to evaluate language disorder, formal thought disorder, positive and negat
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate relationship between HRV (heart rate variability) and depressive symptoms in general population. This study was designed to examine the correlation of HRV and depressive symptom in general rural population. Methods: In 155 participants lived in the anonymous rural area of Gyeonggi-do, Korea, they participated in health promotion program with short term electrode HRV test and BDI (Beck’s depression inventory) self-report. Two participants were

Objectives The aim of this study is to establish Korean pharmacological treatment guidelines for the initial choice of antidepressant for treatment of moderate or severe depression. Methods The process for establishment of guidelines involved determination of important key questions, selection of 12 international and domestic clinical practice guidelines for depression, drawing of recommendation drafts, and peer review. Results Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepineph
