About the Lab
Professor Kang Nam Kyu's research lab focuses on human-centered design, cognitive science, and data-driven methodologies in engineering and design innovation. The lab explores the integration of sensory and cultural factors—particularly Kansei (sensibility and emotional response) and physical perception—into design processes using advanced modeling techniques such as the ADT model. It also investigates the application of machine learning and AI in solving complex engineering problems, including physics-informed neural networks and PDE solvers, while emphasizing collaborative, intercultural design education through international workshops and digital tools.

15With the increases in computational power and advances in machine learning, data-driven learning-based methods have gained significant attention in solving PDEs. Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have recently emerged and succeeded in various forward and inverse PDE problems thanks to their excellent properties, such as flexibility, mesh-free solutions, and unsupervised training. However, their slower convergence speed and relatively inaccurate solutions often limit their broader applicab
Nowadays, many observing works with regard to their circumstance has become preeminent in design field. From the background, there are many researches about the role and value of observing in design process. However, almost of the research concentrate on only observing the users’ behaviors. Therefore, in this research we discuss how to observe, share with other design team member and apply the observed results to design process more effectively. The purpose of this research is to clarify the fol
According to the Japanese dictionary, origin of Kansei is a German philosopher "Sinnlichkeit" of Kant. Elsewhere Kansei is interpreted as "the ability of sense", "the power of intuition" and "Sensibility".
The International Summer Design Workshop (ISDW) is an annual workshop aiming to increase intercultural awareness and promote design skills. In it, participants from South-East Asia gather and, working in intercultural groups using English as a lingua franca, participate in a co-creative design process to develop a product proposal. In 2020, due to international travel issues resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers utilized online communication and design tools (Zoom, Miro, LINE and
Background : In the design field, collaboration is a key method that can widen the conceptual design horizon beyond an individual’s boundaries. Collaboration helps to share knowledge and develop ideas jointly in the design process. It also helps to communicate diverse viewpoints. The ADT model is a representational model for conceptual design. It is used to grasp artifacts as a communication medium between designers and users. During the observation process, three influential factors-physical, e
Nowadays, there are various bottles and packages of liquid laundry detergents in Japan. Many companies have tried to create not only more powerful detergency of the products but also the new value of design in the laundry detergent bottle and package. And our lifestyle is changing like an increasing nuclear family and single life and enjoying a shopping using the internet in recent. Since selecting a detergent might be linked depending on such lifestyle, we need to survey the relationship betwee
Background Nowadays, many researches on the objective and logical evaluations of created (=designed) objects are conducted in design engineering and the Kansei design field. However, there are not many studies on the relationship between a creator’s creativity and the evaluation of the created artwork in the fine art field. Many students in the fine art field conduct creative work with their limited favorite styles although they have not yet developed their own expressive characteristics. This s
In this paper, we analyzed the relationship between user query keywords that is used to search NDSL and technical terms extracted from NDSL journals. For the analysis, we extracted about 833,000 query keywords from NDSL search logs during nearly 17 months and approximately 41,000,000 technical terms from NDSL, INSPEC, FSTA journals. And we used only the English noun phrase in extracted those and then we did an experiment on analysis of equality, relationship analysis and frequency analysis.
