About the Lab
Professor Ki-jeong Kim's research lab specializes in the synthesis, characterization, and functionalization of graphene and other two-dimensional nanomaterials, with a focus on modifying their electronic and surface properties through ion irradiation and electron beam treatment. The lab investigates the interplay between material structure and functionality, particularly in applications related to nanoelectronics and surface engineering. Additionally, the lab explores the biological and physiological impacts of environmental and lifestyle factors—such as maternal infection, physical activity, and mobile phone use—on neurodevelopment and cognitive function, using rodent models and advanced imaging techniques. The integration of materials science with biomedical applications defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach.

Scanning photoemission microscopy (SPEM) images of a graphene flake as well as the C 1s core level spectra for the mono- and multilayer graphene are measured. The samples with lateral dimensions on the micrometer scale are prepared on a SiO2 surface by direct exfoliation of crystalline graphite. Monolayer graphene is distinguished from the multilayer graphens through the chemical contrast images of SPEM.
