About the Lab
Professor Ki-nam Shim's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal endoscopy and digestive disease diagnostics, with a strong focus on advanced endoscopic techniques such as capsule endoscopy and conventional endoscopy for small bowel and colorectal pathologies. The lab investigates clinical applications of these technologies in diagnosing obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, small bowel tumors, and early-stage neoplasms, particularly in challenging cases with atypical presentations. It also contributes to the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines and quality indicators for endoscopic procedures in South Korea.

15BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: It is not normally difficult to diagnose carcinoid tumors (well-differentiated endocrine neoplasms) of the rectum endoscopically, as they usually have a characteristic appearance. However, little is known about the atypical endoscopic findings in some rectal carcinoids and the present study was performed to analyze these. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The endoscopic findings in 67 consecutive patients with rectal carcinoids (37 men, 30 women; age range 23 - 76) were analyzed r
Capsule endoscopy (CE) is considered as a noninvasive and reliable diagnostic tool of examining the entire small bowel. CE has been performed frequently at many medical centers in South Korea; however, there is no evidence-based CE guideline for adequate diagnostic approaches. To provide accurate information and suggest correct testing approaches for small bowel disease, the guideline on CE was developed by the Korean Gut Image Study Group, a part of the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endosc
The results of this study suggest that CE can be helpful in patients suffering from abdominal pain that cannot be explained by established examinations, if the pain is accompanied by weight loss.
Capsule endoscopy (CE) enables evaluation of the entire mucosal surface of the small bowel (SB), which is one of the most important steps for evaluating obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. Although the diagnostic yield of SB CE depends on many clinical factors, there are no reports on quality indicators. Thus, the Korean Gut Image Study Group (KGISG) publishes an article titled, "Quality Indicators for Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy" under approval from the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endos
The prevalence of RE was found to be 7.91% in Korea, and the profiles of reflux symptoms were found to depend on grade of RE and sex.
BACKGROUND: The eradication rate of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) with triple therapy which was considered as standard first-line treatment has decreased to 70-85%. The aim of this study is to compare 7-day triple therapy versus 10-day sequential therapy as the first line treatment. METHODS: Data of 1240 H. pylori positive patients treated with triple therapy or sequential therapy from January 2013 to December 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients who had undertaken previous H. pylo
The feasibility of expanding the indications for endoscopic submucosal dissection to treat early gastric cancer based on long-term outcomes has shown conflicting results. This study aimed to investigate whether outcomes or adverse events associated with endoscopic submucosal dissection are comparable to those of surgery for early gastric cancer that including the absolute and expanded indications.Data of 159 early gastric cancers from 153 patients treated with endoscopic submucosal dissection or
Quality of life (QoL) has become an important issue after early gastric cancer (EGC) treatment. We aimed to compare the QoL of EGC survivors after ESD (n = 241) or laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy (n = 241) without recurrence and to evaluate the QoL over the 5-year period after adjusting for various confounding factors related to QoL. QoL related to the gastric cancer subscale (GCS) was significantly higher in the ESD group than surgery group (p < 0.001). After adjusting for all possible confou
These results suggest that the recurrence of NSAID-induced small bowel injury was not frequent in the presence of conservative treatment. Therefore, the initial diagnosis using CE and the medication history are important.
Recently in Korea, where triple therapy is accepted as the first-line Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication treatment, antibiotic resistance to clarithromycin has increased considerably, resulting in eradication rates of less than 80%. We investigated the efficacy of tailored therapy after a clarithromycin resistance test compared with empirical therapy for H. pylori eradication. The cost-effectiveness of H. pylori eradication success was evaluated according to the average medical cost per
Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is common in the salivary glands but rare in the esophagus. Routine esophagogastroscopy performed in a 54-year-old woman as part of a medical check-up revealed a submucosal tumor (1.5x1.0 cm) at the mid-esophagus. Endoscopic ultrasonography revealed a lesion with mixed echogenicity in the submucosal layer. The submucosal mass was removed by incisional endoscopic enucleation, and pathological analysis revealed epithelial cells with small hyperchromatic angular nucle

15 Background: This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and surgery for the patients with early gastric cancer (EGC). Methods: Data of 79 EGCs in 76 patients treated with ESD and 59 EGCs in 57 patients treated with surgery between 2005 and 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. We only included EGCs confined to the mucosal layer. Demographic data, pathologic data, complication, 5-year overall survival (OS) data were collected. Results: The clinicop
