About the Lab
Professor Heui-Baik Kim's research lab specializes in science education, with a focus on classroom learning environments, teacher professional development, and the interplay between content knowledge and pedagogical practice. The lab investigates constructivist learning environments, student epistemologies, and the impact of curriculum reforms on science instruction, particularly through cross-cultural validation of educational instruments. Research also explores the relationship between intelligence, creativity, and student engagement in science education.

15Abstract The What is Happening in this Class (WIHIC) questionnaire and the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) were used to describe classroom learning environment and the teachers' behaviour in Korea. The three objectives of the study were to provide validation data for the Korean versions of the WIHIC and QTI, investigate associations between students' attitude to science and their perceptions of the classroom environment as assessed by the WIHIC and the QTI, and investigate gender-rela
Abstract This paper describes an investigation in Korea of the extent to which a new general science curriculum, reflecting a constructivist view, has influenced the classroom learning environment in grade 10 science. The Constructivist Learning Environment Survey (CLES) was selected for the investigation and translated into Korean. Other objectives of this study were to determine whether the Korean version of the CLES is valid and reliable, differences between students’ perceptions of their act
Intelligence and creativity are accounted for in terms of two different mental operations referred to as ‘convergent thinking’ and ‘divergent thinking’, respectively. Nevertheless, psychometric evidence on the relationship between intelligence and creativity has been controversial. To clarify their relationship, we characterized the relationship between diverse components of intelligence and creativity through the administration of psychometric tests on a large sample (WAIS, RPM, and TTCT‐figura
Abstract In this study, we examined students’ epistemological and positional framing during small group scientific modeling to explore their context‐dependent perceptions about knowledge, themselves, and others. We focused on two small groups of Korean eighth‐grade students who participated in six modeling activities about excretion. The two groups were purposefully selected because the students showed contrasting patterns of collaboration in modeling activities and sometimes showed significant
BackgroundIn many educational settings, professional development (PD) for in-service teachers assumes particular significance in the wake of curricula reform. This is so that teachers are enabled to become familiar with new competencies that are aligned with new learning standards, and also that teachers may be supported in actively reflecting on their practice. In recent years, some models of PD that incorporate the qualities of sustainability, collaboration and classroom-based research have ga
This is a qualitative review of research literature on the expertise of science teachers. The study first identified a common point of view which the relevant literature shared about teacher expertise. Research methods employed in previous studies were then categorized into four groups, and the characteristics of each group of research methods were discussed. The groups of research methods included uses of questionnaires and interviews, visual representations, classroom observations and discours
The purpose of this study was to interpret students’ participation in terms of social and argumentation norms to improve understanding of social interaction in scientific argumentation. Therefore, the study sought to identify social and argumentation norms formed in group argumentation and to explore changes in students’ participation as lessons progressed. Twelve lessons that included argumentation were delivered to 44 eighth graders in Korea. In each lesson, small group argumentation tasks wer
This study aimed to explore the effect on group dynamics of statements associated with deep learning approaches (DLA) and their contribution to cognitive collaboration and model development during group modeling of blood circulation. A group was selected for an in-depth analysis of collaborative group modeling. This group constructed a model in a similar fashion to a target model and demonstrated within-group dialogic interaction patterns. It was found that statements associated with DLA contrib
The purpose of this study is to identify the epistemological features and model qualities depending on model evaluation levels and to explore the reasoning process behind high-level evaluation through small group interaction about blood circulation. Nine groups of three to four students in the eighth grade participated in the modeling practice. Their group models, which were represented by discourse and blood circulation diagrams, were analyzed for the development of the framework that informed
Science teachers' beliefs about science and school science and their perceptions of the science laboratory learning environment were investigated with an assumption that science laboratory teaching would be affected by science teachers' beliefs. Likert-scale questionnaires of BASSSQ and SLEI were used in this study. The major findings were as follows: 1. Science teachers showed inconsistent beliefs about science and school science. Their responses reflected a patch-like view of postmodern episte
