About the Lab

Professor Kim Min Hee's research lab focuses on integrative health sciences, with a strong emphasis on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying traditional Korean medicine, particularly acupuncture and herbal therapies. The lab investigates the physiological and molecular effects of acupuncture and herbal formulations such as So-Cheong-Ryong-Tang on neurological, musculoskeletal, and inflammatory conditions. Additionally, the lab explores environmental and behavioral influences on health outcomes in vulnerable populations, including older adults and infants, with a focus on social engagement, posture, and musculoskeletal health. These multidisciplinary efforts bridge traditional medicine, neuroscience, and public health to advance evidence-based therapeutic strategies.

Acupuncture-Stimulated Activation of Sensory Neurons
Min-Hee Kim, Yang‐Chun Park, Uk Namgung
SJR Q2Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian StudiesOA

Acupuncture is one of the key therapeutics in clinical oriental medicine, and recent studies using experimental animals have begun to provide the pathophysiological basis for the efficacy of acupuncture. Here, we investigated neuronal responses in rodent models given acupuncture stimulation. In both mice and rats, acupuncture stimulation at zusanli (ST36) generated an increased expression of axonal growth-associated protein (GAP-43) in the sensory neurons of the dorsal root ganglion (DRG). Urban Social and Built Environments and Trajectories of Decline in Social Engagement in Vulnerable Elders
Min-Hee Kim, Philippa Clarke
SJR Q1Research on Aging

There is little knowledge on the relationships between neighborhood environments and trajectories of social engagement among physically and economically vulnerable older adults. We examined the association between neighborhood social and built environments (physical disorder, the presence of crime watch signs, and street conditions) and 36-month trajectories of social engagement among 965 older adults living in Detroit, Michigan. Social withdrawal was defined as a decline in social engagement wi

Abdominal Obesity is Associated With Lower Bone Mineral Density in Non-Weight-Bearing Site in Korean Men
Min-Hee Kim, Sang-Wook Song, Kyung Soo Kim
SJR Q1American Journal of Men s HealthOA

This research aimed to investigate the relationship between abdominal obesity and lower bone mineral density (BMD) at non-weight-bearing site in Korean men using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which is a nationwide cross-sectional survey. The study population ( n = 5,941) was selected from the 2009-2010 survey. Abdominal obesity in men was defined as waist circumference ⩾ 90 cm. Lower BMD state was defined as having T-score of -2.5 or below. To investigate

Effects of a Visual Feedback Device for Hip Adduction on Trunk Muscles and Sitting Posture in Visual Display Terminal Workers
Min-Hee Kim, Won‐gyu Yoo
SJR Q3Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health

This study was designed to identify the effects of a visual feedback device for hip adduction on trunk muscles and sitting posture when working at a visual display terminal. The forward head and trunk flexion angles of 20 workers were analyzed using a motion analysis system, and the activities of the lower trapezius, external abdominal oblique, internal abdominal oblique, and L5 paraspinal muscles were analyzed using a electromyography system. The statistical significance of differences between

SJR Q1BMJ OpenOA

INTRODUCTION: So-Cheong-Ryong-Tang (SCRT) is a herbal medicine widely used in traditional medicine for treating allergic rhinitis (AR). In animal studies, SCRT has suppressed the progression of AR. The main purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of the SCRT for the treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR) and discover the underlying mechanisms resulting in anti-inflammatory effects in humans. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will conduct a double-blind, randomised, placebo-cont

Infants' social-emotional adjustment within a childcare context of Korea
Min-Hee Kim, Hyuk-Jun Moon
SJR Q1Asia Pacific Journal of Education

In a child day-care setting, the naturally occurring social-emotional behaviours and play interaction of 51 infants were observed and recorded. Individual differences in gender, age, temperament, and maternal parenting behaviours were examined to understand how these variables might be related to social-emotional adjustment of infants. The measures used in this study were Social-emotional Behaviour, Play Interaction, Temperament, and Parenting Behaviour. Results indicate that boys showed externa

SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pulmonary system associated with many wheeze-to-sleep apnea complications that may lead to death. In 2019, approximately 262 million patients suffered from asthma, and 455 thousand died from the disease worldwide. It is a more severe health problem in children and older adults, and as the aging of society intensifies, the problem will continue to worsen. Asthma inducers can be classified as indoor and outdoor allergens and can cause asthma due to t
