About the Lab
Professor Kim Myung-hee's research lab specializes in clinical microbiology and translational biomarker research, focusing on antimicrobial resistance, particularly extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae and quinolone resistance genes. The lab investigates novel diagnostic biomarkers for infectious diseases, including bacteremia, BK virus-associated nephropathy, and acute ischemic stroke, with an emphasis on improving early diagnosis and guiding antibiotic stewardship. Their work also explores molecular virology aspects, such as occult hepatitis B virus infection in anti-HBc alone individuals, highlighting viral genetic variations and their clinical implications. The lab integrates molecular diagnostics with clinical outcomes to enhance patient management in infectious disease settings.

15In febrile patients, elevated PCT may help predict bacteremia; furthermore, low PCT levels were helpful for ruling out bacteremia as a diagnosis. Therefore, PCT assessment could help physicians limit the number of prescriptions for antibiotics.
This study suggests that urinary exosomal bkv-miR-B1-5p and bkv-miR-B1-5p/miR-16 could be surrogate markers for the diagnosis of BKVN.
PURPOSE: Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are cephalosporinases that confer resistance to a wide variety of oxyimino cephalosporins and create serious therapeutic problems. In addition, the quinolone resistance qnr genes are becoming increasingly prevalent in clinical isolates, some of which also produce ESBL. This study was designed to evaluate the occurrence and genotypic distribution of ESBL producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) as well as the
Rapid diagnosis and timely treatment improves the outcome in patients with ischemic stroke, but a rapid and sensitive blood test for ischemic stroke does not exist. This study tested whether a panel of biomarkers might be useful in the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke. Consecutive patients with suspected stroke presenting to the emergency department of a university hospital in Korea were enrolled. Plasma specimens were assayed for brain natriuretic peptide, D-dimer, matrix metalloproteinase-9,

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate the molecular characteristics of occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in 'anti-HBc alone' subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients with 'anti-HBc alone' and 20 control patients diagnosed with HBV were analyzed regarding S and pre-S gene mutations. All specimens were analyzed for HBs Ag, anti-HBc, and anti-HBs. For specimens with an anti-HBc alone, quantitative analysis of HBV DNA, as well as sequencing and mutation analysis of S a
The purposes of this study were to analyse the factors of shopping orientation of cosmeceuticals, to classify women consumers according to their shopping orientation of cosmeceuticals, and to investigate the differences in the level of satisfaction with cosmeceuticals among the groups classified according to their shopping orientation of cosmeceuticals. The study was implemented through a descriptive survey method using a questionnaire. Subjects were 1258 women in their 20's-60's residing in Seo
Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is widely known as an opportunistic bacterial pathogen that causes infection more frequently among immunocompromised individuals. Our case demonstrated the limitation of the current VITEK 2 system for the idendification of A. baumannii. Four clinical isolates of A. baumannii were identified as Alcaligenes faecalis by the VITEK 2 system. Misidentification might lead to unnecessary tests and inappropriate treatments. Additional methods appear to be helpful fo
Healthcare-associated infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have recently become an important issue for healthcare facilities due to high rates of infection, mortality, and high treatment costs. We investigated the frequency of MRSA in healthcare workers (HCWs) via nasal carriage and assessed the performance of the LightCycler® MRSA Advanced test. We tested nasal swabs from the anterior nares of participating HCWs at an intensive care unit. Nasal swabs were iden
Chromobacterium violaceum is a gram negative straight rod, 0.8-1.2 by 2.5 to 6.0 m, which is motile by one polar flagella and one to four lateral flagella. The organism inhabits soil and water and is often found in semitropical and tropical climates. Infections in humans are rare. We report a case of infection caused by strains of C. violaceum. A 38-year-old male patient was admitted to KyungHee University Hospital, Seoul, Korea on July 28th, 2003, after a car accident. The patient had multiple
This study obtains information required for a comprehensive understanding of the brand-switching behavior by cosmetics consumers and for the establishment of effective strategies to make customers more loyal to the company. The study examines the relationships between customer shopping orientation and brand switching motives with respect to cosmeceuticals. A descriptive survey method using a self-administered questionnaire was employed. The sample consisted of 1,258 females between the ages of 2
Purpose: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay, introduced as a fast and sensitive diagnostic method, is useful in detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of in-house PCR assay in the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by comparing PCR results with conventional diagnostic techniques and Cobas Amplicor M. tuberculosis™ kit. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively assessed the diagnostic yield of in-house PCR method employed for the amp
