About the Lab
Professor Kim Young-jin's research lab specializes in biomedical engineering and infectious disease diagnostics, with a focus on improving spinal fusion stability through biomechanical modeling and developing advanced diagnostic tools for mycobacterial infections. The lab investigates implant biomechanics using finite element analysis and explores novel molecular diagnostics, including PCR-based methods and ELISA assays, to enhance the detection and differentiation of viable pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacteria. The research also extends to polymer science, particularly in the development and characterization of polymer blends for potential biomedical applications. Abstract Melt blends of ABS and PMMA were prepared using three types of ABS having different acrylonitrile (AN) content, and PMMAs with different MW. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to replace the usual intradermal test, and its performance in an area of endemicity was evaluated.
