About the Lab
Professor Kwang Sik Joo's research lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying ciliopathies, retinal degenerative diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders, with a strong emphasis on identifying disease-causing genes and understanding their pathogenic mechanisms. The lab employs advanced genomic technologies such as next-generation sequencing and whole-exome sequencing to uncover novel genetic variants in inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) and Usher syndrome, particularly in East Asian populations. A key research direction involves dissecting the role of centrosomal and ciliary proteins—such as CCDC41 and Cep164—in primary cilium formation and function, linking ciliary defects to human disease. The lab also investigates the immunomodulatory roles of endogenous factors like angiogenin in ocular surface inflammation, bridging innate immunity and ocular pathologies.
