About the Lab

Professor Kwhanmien Kim's research lab specializes in thoracic surgery and oncology, with a strong focus on improving outcomes in lung cancer and esophageal surgery. The lab investigates surgical techniques—particularly video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and endoscopic therapies—aimed at minimizing complications and enhancing recovery. Key research directions include the pathological prognostic factors in early-stage lung adenocarcinoma, the application of photodynamic therapy in lung cancer, and innovative postoperative management strategies such as endoscopic vacuum therapy and high-frequency chest wall oscillation. The lab integrates clinical outcomes with molecular and pathological analysis to advance personalized surgical care.

SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

BACKGROUND: Concerns remain unresolved regarding the safety of unplanned conversion to open thoracotomy during video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy. We analyzed both early and late outcomes after thoracotomy conversion from VATS. METHODS: From December 2003 to December 2008, a total of 738 VATS lobectomies were attempted. Among them were 34 unplanned conversions to open thoracotomy. Patient characteristics, operative data, and early and late postoperative outcomes were analyzed retro

BACKGROUND: Histological heterogeneity is thought to be important for prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma. We investigated to determine pathological features with prognostic value for recurrence of early stage lung cancer. METHODS: A total of 368 patients who underwent curative surgical resection for early stage lung adenocarcinoma between 2009 and 2012 were enrolled. Pathologic characteristics including the presence of visceral pleural invasion, micropapillary patterns, aerogenous spread, lymphova

-methoxyl purpurinimide (NMPi), against A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cells in vitro as well as in A549 tumor-bearing mice in vivo. Cell viability, microscopy, and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analyses were performed for the in vitro studies. MPPa and NMPi showed high phototoxicity in vitro, which was dependent on the concentration of the photosensitizers as well as the light irradiation time. In the animal study, tumor volume change, tumor surface alterations, and hematoxylin & e

SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

BACKGROUND: Postoperative leakage after esophagectomy is associated with significant life-threatening complications. Recently, endoscopic vacuum therapy (EVT) was introduced and has been successfully used as a new treatment option. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of EVT for the management of postoperative leakage after esophagectomy. METHODS: A total of 22 patients were treated with either intraluminal or intracavitary EVT for the management of postoperative lea

SJR Q1Critical Care Medicine

High-frequency chest wall oscillation therapy after pulmonary lobectomy resulted in significantly improved immediate postoperative pulmonary function recovery compared to conventional physiotherapy, without any significant adverse effects. These results suggest that high-frequency chest wall oscillation therapy may be a valuable tool in the postoperative care of non-small cell lung cancer patients with lobectomy.
