About the Lab
Professor Kwon Kyung-ah's research lab specializes in Korean modernist literature and visual arts, with a focus on the evolution of modernist expression in 20th-century Korea. The lab explores modernist poetry coterie movements such as Sinshiron and Hubangi, examining their literary innovations and responses to historical trauma, modernity, and national transformation. It also investigates the visual representation of gender and identity in modern Korean art, particularly through the work of painter Chun Kyung-ja, analyzing how artistic style and thematic focus evolved across decades. The lab integrates literary, artistic, and philosophical perspectives to examine modernity as both a source of anxiety and creative potential.

The ‘Sinshiron’ coterie was formed to go beyond the achievements and limits of Korean modernist poetry of the 1930s and sought a new world of poetry in response to the post-liberation changing environment. They published their first poetry magazine 『Sinshiron』in 1948 and their second coterie magazine 『A New City and the Chorus of Citizens』 in 1949. However, the 『Sinshiron』 has not been discovered until recently, and thus the previous studies on 『Sinshiron』 have mainly relied on the latter magazi

Chun Kyung-ja is a painter who is well-known for her images of women in Korea’s modern art scene. She persistently produced images of women, and more than half of her works contain female images. In particular, images of women surrounded by flowers and butterflies can be considered Chun’s signature paintings. Chun’s images of women show a persistent identity, a sensitive exploration of women, and love for the objects she admired. In this research, I mainly focus on analyzing images of women, whi

The modernist movements of the 1950s in Korea are discussed with focus on the activities of Hubangi coterie members, especially Kim Kyung-rin. Kim Kyung-rin provided an important feature in Korean modernism of the 1950s by continuing to experiment with the modernist style while joining coterie groups from Shin Siron (New Poetics) to Hubangi. His discussion about modernity starts from the inflow of modern civilization represented by machines and materials and from the resulting fear and despair.
