About the Lab
Professor Kyu Tae Lee's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal and pancreatic malignancies, with a focus on early detection, biomarker discovery, and molecular mechanisms underlying tumor progression. The lab investigates tumor markers such as CA 19-9 and inflammatory mediators like COX-2 and iNOS to improve diagnostic accuracy and understand the biological behavior of pancreatic and biliary tract cancers. Additionally, the lab explores interventional radiology techniques, such as percutaneous cholecystostomy, for managing acute complications in high-risk patients.

15BACKGROUND AND AIM: Although the prognosis for pancreatic cancer is generally poor, it is well known that the survival rate for resected pancreatic cancer is much higher than that for more conservative treatment. The importance of early detection is emphasized for resection of pancreatic cancer. Measurement of serum carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 has shown satisfactory sensitivity and predictive value in symptomatic patients, but no available data has been found on healthy asymptomatic subjects.
Gastric and intestinal types of IPN-B have similar clinical characteristics compared with the pancreaticobiliary type, which has a worse prognosis.
Cystic fluid carbohydrate antigen 19-9 levels and carcinoembryonic antigen levels were not useful for differential diagnosis of BCA vs. HSC. BCA were more common than HSCs in females, patients with a septum, and patients with septal thickening.
Percutaneous cholecystostomy is an effective procedure and a good alternative for patients unfit to undergo immediate surgery because of severe sepsis or an underlying comorbidity. After patients with AAC have recovered from percutaneous cholecystostomy, further treatment such as cholecystectomy might not be needed.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recently, it has been recognized that both cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) produce important endogenous factors of human tumor progression. However, the clinicopathological and biological significance of the expression of COX-2 and iNOS in pancreatic cancer remains unclear. The objective of this study is to find the possible roles and clinical significance of COX-2 and iNOS expression in pancreatic cancer. METHODS: Seventy-two pancreatic ad
Antibiotic resistance in bacteremic BTI has increased markedly during the past 10 years. Almost half of nosocomial bacteremic BTI caused by common Gram-negative pathogens during 2005-2009 (58.5%) could not be treated with third-generation cephalosporin. Clinical outcomes were found to be associated with bacteremia severity and underlying illness rather than antibiotic resistance.
OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is widely performed for pancreatic masses. The 25-gauge needle (25G) might be easier to be manipulated and expected to be associated with fewer complications since it is thinner and more flexible than the 22-gauge needle (22G) although obtaining adequate specimens is questioned. In this randomized trial, the authors tried to compare prospectively 25G and 22G in diagnostic accuracy, manipulability from the operator's v
For patients with a pancreatic mass, if their radiological images show homogeneous enhancement on the portal venous phase, the absence of significant upstream main pancreatic duct dilatation greater than 5 mm, and the absence of proximal pancreatic atrophy, then conducting further evaluations should be considered to avoid performing unnecessary surgery.
We found a prediction model for postoperative prognosis of pancreatic cancer using 7 microRNA expression patterns from archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded surgical specimens. The methods for microRNA detection and new microRNAs detected in this study provide new insights for new research of surgically resected pancreatic cancer samples and microRNAs.
Patient's age (>60 y) and large polyp size (>10 mm) were significant predictive factors for neoplastic GB polyps. GB polyps less than 10 mm in diameter do not require surgical intervention simply because they grow.
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Intraductal papillary mucinous tumor (IPMT) of the pancreas can be divided into three clinically distinct subtypes: main duct type, branch duct type and mixed type. Although it has been reported that the branch duct type IPMT is less invasive than the main duct type IPMT, we experienced a number of branch duct type IPMT having a poor prognosis. In the present study we surveyed the survival and recurrence rates according to the subtypes. METHODS: Sixty-seven IPMT cases were st
