About the Lab
Professor Kyung Il Park's research lab specializes in cardiovascular and marine biomedical research, with a focus on interventional cardiology, particularly the functional assessment of coronary artery disease using fractional flow reserve (FFR) and the long-term outcomes of revascularization strategies. The lab also investigates marine disease ecology, particularly the role of parasitic pathogens like *Perkinsus* spp. in mass mortality events of commercially important bivalves such as the Manila clam. Additional research interests include the impact of antiplatelet therapy—especially ticagrelor—on microvascular function and the role of hemoglobin variability in the development of hypertension. The lab integrates clinical cardiology with population-based epidemiology and environmental health sciences to address both human and ecological health challenges.

15Background: We evaluated the prognosis of deferred and revascularized coronary stenoses after fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement to assess its revascularization threshold in clinical practice. Methods: The IRIS-FFR registry (Interventional Cardiology Research In-cooperation Society Fractional Flow Reserve) prospectively enrolled 5846 patients with ≥1coronary lesion with FFR measurement. Revascularization was deferred in 6468 lesions and performed in 2165 lesions after FFR assessment. The
Mass mortality of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum has been reported all along the west and south coast of Korea for the past several years. As a pathogenic agent, Perkinsus sp., an endoparasitic protozoan has been identified in this study and believed to be responsible for the mass mortalities. Prevalence and infection intensity of Perkinsus sp. was investigated from a Manila clam population inhabiting at Komsoe Bay in the west coast where mass mortality of the clam has been reported. A
BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, mass mortality events of Manila clams have been reported from several tidal flats on the west coast of Korea during hot summers. During such mortality events, once clams simultaneously surface, they fail to re-burrow, perishing within a week. The present study aimed to identify the possible causes of the mass mortality of this clam species by investigating the Perkinsus olseni parasite burden and immune parameters of surfaced clams (SC) and normal buried cl
Background: Ticagrelor reduced the rate of myocardial infarction and death compared with clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndrome. However, little is understood about chronic treatment of ticagrelor on microvascular dysfunction. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of ticagrelor maintenance treatment on microvascular system and coronary flow in comparison with clopidogrel. Methods: This study was a nonblinded, open-label, parallel-group, prospective, randomized contro

Hemoglobin level determines blood viscosity and as hemoglobin level rises, blood pressure rises. However, hemoglobin level in individuals is not fixed and change in hemoglobin is affected by various clinical conditions. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the hemoglobin variability affects the development of hypertension using Korean cohort database. This study was conducted with 94,798 adults (age ≥ 40 years) who visited the health screening in 2006 or 2007 (index year) and had
BACKGROUND: The paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) and sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) are first-generation drug-eluting stents (DES) that have been the most widely used; however, it is unclear whether there are differences in the long-term safety and efficacy between the 2 stents. The long-term effectiveness of DES in unselected people with diabetes is also currently unclear. Moreover, the possibility of late catch-up is suggested in the DES population. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study is an 8-center
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Left ventricular (LV) midwall fractional shortening (FSmw) reflects systolic function more accurately than LV endocardial fractional shortening (eFS) in patients with increased LV wall thickness. Although the normal reference ranges of LV-FSmw have been suggested in Western population studies, its reference values and age-related physiological changes in Eastern populations remain unknown. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Conventional echocardiographic parameters, LV-FSmw, and st
Background This study investigated whether the microvascular dysfunction differed between culprit and non‐culprit vessels in patients with acute coronary syndrome who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention. Methods and Results In 115 prospectively recruited patients, after successful percutaneous coronary intervention, culprit and non‐culprit intracoronary hemodynamic measurements were performed and repeated at 6‐month follow‐up. 13 N‐ammonia positron emission tomography was performed at 6
