Professor Kyung-A Kim's research lab specializes in craniofacial biology and orthodontic biomechanics, focusing on the structural and mechanical properties of biological tissues such as black coral skeletons and human dental and skeletal tissues. The lab investigates 3D craniofacial morphology, dental and skeletal asymmetries, and the effects of orthodontic interventions like rapid palatal expanders on craniofacial development. 15Black coral skeletons are laminated composites, composed primarily of chitin fibrils and non-fibrillar protein. The novel design of the screw permits easy placement and removal for the IMF. In addition, its advantages include increased stability with unique design, less gingival irritation, and simple vector modification of the IMF elastics by adjusting the hook length and shape.
The novel design of the spike screw permits clinicians to have minimum invasive and easy placement and removal of the appliance while maintaining a good control over tooth movement with improved stability in various clinical cases.
