About the Lab

Professor Lee Dong Ho's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal and liver diseases, with a strong focus on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and *Helicobacter pylori*-related gastrointestinal disorders. The lab investigates advanced medical imaging techniques—such as gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and endoscopic ultrasonography—for improved diagnosis and staging of liver and gastric cancers. Additionally, the lab explores genetic and inflammatory markers, including cytokine polymorphisms and antibiotic resistance mutations, to understand disease progression and optimize treatment strategies.

Radiofrequency Ablation of Hepatocellular Carcinoma as First-Line Treatment: Long-term Results and Prognostic Factors in 162 Patients with Cirrhosis

RFA is a safe and effective first-line treatment for early-stage HCC, with a 5-year survival rate of 67.9%. High serum α-fetoprotein level, advanced Child-Pugh class, and presence of portosystemic collateral vessels had a significant negative effect on overall survival.

HCCs and AEPs show different enhancing features on the delayed dynamic and hepatobiliary phases of gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI. Gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI may, therefore, help to differentiate between HCC and AEP.

Imaging evaluation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: focused on quantification
Dong Ho Lee
SJR Q1Clinical and Molecular HepatologyOA

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been an emerging major health problem, and the most common cause of chronic liver disease in Western countries. Traditionally, liver biopsy has been gold standard method for quantification of hepatic steatosis. However, its invasive nature with potential complication as well as measurement variability are major problem. Thus, various imaging studies have been used for evaluation of hepatic steatosis. Ultrasonography provides fairly good accuracy to d

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) and multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) for the locoregional staging of gastric cancer. EUS and computed tomography (CT) are valuable tools for the preoperative evaluation of gastric cancer. With the introduction of new therapeutic options and the recent improvements in CT technology, further evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of EUS and MDCT is needed. METHODS: In total, 277 p

Change in Antibiotic Resistance of Helicobacter pylori Strains and the Effect of A2143G Point Mutation of 23S rRNA on the Eradication of H. pylori in a Single Center of Korea
Tae Jun Hwang, Nayoung Kim, Hong Bin Kim, Byoung Hwan Lee, Ryoung Hee Nam, Ji Hyun Park, Mi Kyoung Lee, Young Soo Park, Dong Ho Lee, Hyun Chae Jung, In Sung Song
SJR Q2Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology

Clarithromycin resistance of H. pylori, which determined the efficacy of H. pylori eradication of proton pump inhibitor triple regimen, was found to be increased in a single center study. A2143G was an important 23S rRNA mutation associated with clarithromycin resistance and affected the H. pylori eradication efficacy.

These results suggest that the genetic polymorphisms of these 3 inflammation-related cytokines, IL-10, IL-8, and IL-6, are associated with the development of H. pylori-associated gastroduodenal disease.

Recent Advances in the Image-Guided Tumor Ablation of Liver Malignancies: Radiofrequency Ablation with Multiple Electrodes, Real-Time Multimodality Fusion Imaging, and New Energy Sources
Dong Ho Lee, Jeong Min Lee
SJR Q1Korean Journal of RadiologyOA

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has emerged as an effective loco-regional treatment modality for malignant hepatic tumors. Indeed, studies have demonstrated that RFA of early stage hepatocellular carcinomas can provide comparable overall survival to surgical resection. However, the incidence of local tumor progression (LTP) after RFA is significantly higher than that of surgical resection. Thus, to overcome this limitation, multiple electrode radiofrequency (RF) systems that use a multi-channel RF

SJR Q1Radiology

Background Allograft damage (hepatic parenchymal damage) after liver transplant is associated with the degree of necroinflammation in graft liver. According to a recent animal study, shear-wave dispersion slope obtained at US shear-wave elastography (SWE) is associated with necroinflammatory activity in the liver. Purpose To evaluate the role of shear-wave dispersion slope in detecting allograft damage after liver transplant. Materials and Methods In this prospective study, 104 liver transplant

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although triple combination therapy containing a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and two antibiotics is considered as a standard regimen for the first-line anti-Helicobacter pylori treatment, there are still debates on the ideal duration of treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacies of 7-day and 14-day PPI-containing triple therapy. SJR Q2Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology

These results show that there is institutional difference of antibiotic resistance of H. pylori, explaining the institutional difference of eradication rate of H. pylori. The resistance to clarithromycin seems to be an important determinant for the eradication by proton pump inhibitor triple therapy but resistance to amoxicillin does not have any effect.
