About the Lab
Professor LEE Kwan Seok's research lab specializes in the critical study of modern and contemporary museum architecture, with a focus on the philosophical, spatial, and formal principles underlying seminal works by architects such as Tadao Ando, Le Corbusier, Frank Gehry, and Richard Meier. The lab explores architectural phenomenology, the role of circulation and light in shaping spatial experience, and the ideological foundations of modern architecture—particularly the interplay between machine aesthetics, spiritual values, and urban context. Research emphasizes how architectural form and programmatic intent converge to create transformative museum experiences.

14This study considers the architectural characteristics and its implications in Tadao Ando's Museums through the paths from external approach to exhibition space. The research results are as follows; ①Approach to Ando's museums is a slow ascension through paths intentionally detoured in company with water. The exceptional opacity in front of visitors is not a barrier but an invitation which leads them to the other side. ②The reversed paths form ascension to descension just before or after the ent
This research studies the characteristics of Gehry’s museums in relation to his outlook on architecture, and considers the significances of his museums in the contemporary museum architecture as follows; ① Complex characteristics of Gehry's museums are well brought out in two features: contrastive combination between regular forms and irregular forms from the viewpoint of material and shape as a result of his architectural inclination, fragmentalization and dualism, and the relief of formal hete
This paper studies Le Corbusier's attitude towards machine through many comments on machine described in his books issued in 1920s. First, it confirms Le Corbusier's insight into the essence of machine from which he had extracted lessons for architects. Second, it considers Le Corbusier's synthetic and omnidirectional standpoints to understand machine through rationalistic, practicalistic and functionalistic attitudes. Third, it studies how Le Corbusier could stand as an well-balanced architect
This paper studies the definitions of new architecture suitable for a new epoche, passionately expressed in Le Corbusier's three books(Vers une architecture, L'Art décoratif d'aujourd'hui , Précisions sur l'état présent de l'architecture et de l'urbanisme ) arisen from l'Esprit Nouveau in 1920s, the period regarded as the formation age of Modern Architecture. First, as a basic analysis, Le Corbusier's consciousness of the spirit of the times and his recognition on machine were considered to help
This study presents first the process of establishment and its architectural characteristics of the Muse croissance illimite which, since 1931, has been proposed with confidence by Le Corbusier as a prototype of the modern museum architecture, and next it considers the characteristics and logical basis of differentiation in Le Corbusier's three museums realized on this concept. In 1931, Le Corbusier proposed the Museum of Contemporary Art(Paris) on the basis of unlimited growth dream in keeping t
This study shows the result of which architect R. Meier applied synthetically his architectural philosophy such as serious consideration for natural light, conviction of white color and the will to architectural promenade to the museum architecture. Externally, Meier's museums conduct visitors to the entrance hall, the starting point of architectural promenade, with double faade or attractive curved walls against overall grid system, and clarify the course of promenade through a front ramp. This study focusing on Norman Foster's museums tries to explain the aspects of harmony pursued between the interior/exterior of museums and the surrounding classical contexture while keeping to technological images consistently and tries to show its meaning in the contemporary museum architecture. The results of this research show that, although Foster’s museums in three categories(new construction, renovation and extension) should be conceived differently, Foster always applied high technology
This paper studies how unique architectural philosophies of Hans Hollein and Arata Isozaki have been manifested as architectural characteristics in their Museum Abteiberg and LA MoCA, and how they cope with architectural demands of the museum architecture. Even though these two museums have revealed different aspects as a result of different architectural attitudes of each architect, different site condition and design guide, they show commonness like revealing to draw visitors, hiding by means
The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of natural light and to expose its spatial role and signification in the worship spaces of Le Corbusier’s Chapelle Notre Dame du Haut and Couvent Sainte Marie de la Tourette. In case of lights of which their light sources are exposed, most of them brighten upper part of the worship spaces and back walls of the altar where are not illuminated by artificial lighting, and save spatial qualities like an inside dynamics. Even though the ligh
This paper studies the program to estimate simultaneously the proper size and the number of lecture rooms by sizes in university when the curriculum has been fixed and the number of students present at a lecture class can be predicted. Proposed gradual forms can be applied according to several variables like basis size of lecture rooms, structural modules of the building and ratio of occupation of lecture rooms etc. The validity of proposed method is verified through the application of real case
This paper considers the contents of architectural education advocated through books and lectures written and given by Le Corbusier who has refused incessant demands of young students of architecture to give them instructions. His principal objects of architectural education can be classified broadly into four groups. First, even though he scolded imprudent reception of the past without the spirits of the times, he emphasized the importance of tradition, aboriginality and folk culture. Second, h
