About the Lab

Professor Mi Mi Oh's research lab focuses on urological disorders, particularly the role of microbiomes—gut, vaginal, and urinary—in female and postmenopausal health. The lab investigates the interplay between hormonal changes, microbial dysbiosis, and lower urinary tract symptoms, with an emphasis on diagnostic imaging techniques such as MRI and voiding cystourethrography in evaluating urethral strictures and vesicoureteral reflux. Additional research explores patient-centered outcomes in urodynamic testing, including the use of non-invasive interventions like heating pads to reduce anxiety and discomfort. The lab integrates clinical urology with molecular and imaging biomarkers to improve diagnosis and management of lower urinary tract dysfunctions.

Menopausal Changes in the Microbiome—A Review Focused on the Genitourinary Microbiome

SJR Q2DiagnosticsOA

A balanced interaction between the host and its microbiome is crucial to health. Research regarding the significance of the gut and vaginal microbiomes in female health is substantial. However, less data regarding the urinary microbiome are available. Interactions between the gut, vaginal, and urinary microbiomes are also currently being researched. Hormone-induced dysbiosis after menopause is believed to have effects on physical changes and health consequences. Postmenopausal changes in the gut

SJR Q1The Journal of Urology

PURPOSE: We prospectively evaluated magnetic resonance urethrography for depicting obliterative posterior urethral stricture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 25 men with a mean age of 48.7 years (range 21 to 72) with complete posterior urethral stricture were studied preoperatively with axial and sagittal turbo spin-echo T2, sagittal T1 and contrast enhanced sagittal T1-weighted images. Of the 25 patients 22 underwent conventional retrograde urethrography with voiding cystourethrography. For m

Predictive Factors for Acute Renal Cortical Scintigraphic Lesion and Ultimate Scar Formation in Children With First Febrile Urinary Tract Infection
Mi Mi Oh, Jun Cheon, Seok Ho Kang, Hong Seok Park, Jeong Gu Lee, Du Geon Moon
SJR Q1The Journal of Urology

Since vesicoureteral reflux is the common risk factor for acute scintigraphic lesion and ultimate scar formation, voiding cystourethrogram must be considered as an initial study in patients with acute febrile urinary tract infection.

SJR Q1The Journal of Urology

PURPOSE: We assessed whether differences exist in the rates of acute photon defect and scar formation using dimercapto-succinic acid scintigraphy according to the presence and grade of vesicoureteral reflux. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 389 patients with a first febrile urinary tract infection were enrolled. For all patients ultrasonography, dimercapto-succinic acid scintigraphy and voiding cystourethrography were performed. Dimercapto-succinic acid scintigraphy was performed within 5 days

SJR Q1Neurourology and Urodynamics

AIMS: Although generally well tolerated, a urodynamic study is an unpleasant and stressful procedure for some patients. This study evaluated the effects of a heating pad on anxiety, pain, and distress during urodynamic studies in female patients with stress urinary incontinence. METHODS: A total of 74 female patients with stress urinary incontinence who underwent a urodynamic study between May 2015 and October 2015 were randomized to either the experimental group using a heating pad (n = 37) or

Is there a correlation between the outcome of transurethral resection of prostate and preoperative degree of bladder outlet obstruction?

SJR Q1Asian Journal of AndrologyOA

To compare the impact of transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) on symptom scores and maximal flow rates (Qmax) in patients with equivocal bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and definite BOO and to assess the relationship between the surgical outcomes and degree of preoperative BOO, we prospectively evaluated men with lower urinary tract symptoms and bladder outlet obstruction index (BOOI) greater than 20, who were refractory to conventional medical treatment and underwent TURP.
