About the Lab
Professor Mijung Kim's research lab focuses on cutting-edge biomedical and engineering innovations, spanning regenerative medicine, flexible electronics, and advanced motor technologies. The lab investigates age-related changes in hematopoietic stem cells to understand hematopoietic decline, develops stretchable and foldable electronic systems using origami-inspired substrates and hybrid conductive materials, and explores diagnostic techniques for electric machines with improved sensitivity to rotor eccentricities. Additionally, the lab contributes to oncology research by examining chemokine receptor roles in ovarian cancer and enhances energy efficiency in permanent magnet motors through intelligent design and magnetic circuit modeling.

15To study age-related changes of mouse bone marrow (BM) cells and hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), we isolated rhodamine-123(low) (Rh(low)) Thy1.1(low) Lin(-)Sca-1(+) (TLS) HSCs from the BM of old mice and compared their functional characteristics to cells of the same phenotype isolated from young mice. We observed impaired recovery of B lymphocytes and decreased self-renewal in recipients of old Rh(low) cells compared to young Rh(low) cells. Blockade of Rh efflux using verapamil improved lymphoi
Here we demonstrate fully-integrated, bezel-less transistor arrays using stretchable origami substrates and foldable conducting interconnects. Reversible folding of these arrays is enabled by origami substrates which are composed of rigid support fixtures and foldable elastic joints. In addition, hybrid structures of thin metal films and metallic nanowires worked as foldable interconnects which are located on the elastomeric joints.
Chemokine receptor-ligand interactions are important to support functioning of both normal and pathologic cells. The expression and function of chemokine receptors in epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) is largely unknown. Here, we report that the lymphotactin receptor (XCR1) was expressed in primary and metastatic human epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) specimens and cell lines. In contrast, expression of XCR1 was not detected in the normal ovary or in human normal ovarian surface epithelial ce

The need for the detection of these rotor eccentricities has lead to the development of monitoring methods by increasing sensitivity and noise immunity. This paper proposes a diagnosis method for an induction
Permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motors (PMSMs) have been used to drive a number of vehicles. They have high torque density, high efficiency, and a wide speed range. However, the high cost of PMs is disadvantageous. This paper presents a technique for increasing the torque density by modifying the shape of the PMs and minimizing the magnet volume. The PM characteristics such as flux density, demagnetizing force, PM energy product, and the air-gap flux density are represented by a lumped magneti
The purpose of this study was to identify the current status of the new graduate nurses’ education system, to establish guidelines for the education of new graduate nurses, and to provide dates for the improvement of the education system. Eighty-nine hospitals participated in the survey from July to August 2018. The questionnaires consisted of 24 items including general characteristics, new graduate nurses’ education system, operation of nursing education teams, and preceptorship programs. The a
Quality assurance for common APIs is important since the the reliability of APIs affects the quality of other systems using the APIs. Testing is a common practice to ensure the quality of APIs, but it is a challenging and laborious task especially for industrial projects. Due to a large number of APIs with tight time constraints and limited resources, it is hard to write enough test cases for all APIs. To address these challenges, we present a novel technique, REMI that predicts high risk APIs i
Despite inquiry-based teaching was introduced and encouraged as significant tool to develop students‘ scientific knowledge and habits of mind, its implementation has not been well established in science classrooms in Korea. To understand the challenges and difficulties of the practice of inquiry practical work, this study particularly aims to understand how pre-service teachers‘ understandings of inquiry and practical work have been shaped in educational and social contexts in Korea and later ho
Lipid-protein complexes are the basis of pulmonary surfactants covering the respiratory surface and mediating gas exchange in lungs. Cardiolipin is a mitochondrial lipid overexpressed in mammalian lungs infected by bacterial pneumonia. In addition, increased oxygen supply (hyperoxia) is a pathological factor also critical in bacterial pneumonia. In this paper we fabricate a micrometer-size graphene-based sensor to measure oxygen permeation through pulmonary membranes. Combining oxygen sensing, X
Mobile advertising has become a new form of marketingcommunications in recent years as mobile phones became ubiquitous in many countries. While the consumer aspect of mobile advertising has attracted much attention, few studies have touched on the business aspect of this new advertising medium. The present paper explores the status and trends of mobile advertising through in-depth personalinterviews with the advertising practitioners in one of the leading mobileeconomies in the world, South Kore
Given the growing availability of affordable scale-up servers, our goal is to bring the performance benefits of in-memory processing on scale-up servers to an increasingly common class of data analytics applications that process small to medium size datasets (up to a few 100GBs) that can easily fit in the memory of a typical scale-up server To achieve this goal, we leverage Spark, an existing memory-centric data analytics framework with wide-spread adoption among data scientists. Bringing Spark'
