About the Lab
Professor Mimi Kim's research lab specializes in hepatology and gastrointestinal disease, with a strong focus on liver metabolism, fatty liver disease, and advanced hepatic fibrosis. The lab investigates diagnostic strategies for liver fibrosis using non-invasive imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and biomarkers like M2BPGi, aiming to improve early detection and risk stratification. Additional research directions include sarcopenia in chronic liver disease, post-surgical outcomes after bariatric and antireflux procedures, and the prevalence and characterization of gallbladder sludge. The lab integrates radiological, clinical, and epidemiological approaches to advance precision medicine in liver and biliary disorders.

15Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) may represent a superior alternative to reoperative fundoplication in patients with symptomatic failure. Our goal was to assess early outcomes of patients after RYGB for failed fundoplication. Records of patients who underwent fundoplication takedown and RYGB from March 2007 to June 2013 were reviewed for demographics, comorbidities, operative findings, and perioperative outcomes. Data are reported as medians (range). Forty-five patients who had undergone 64 prior
BACKGROUND & AIMS: There are several reports on the prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). However, the prevalence of advanced hepatic fibrosis in MAFLD is largely unknown. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of advanced fibrosis in MAFLD. METHODS: A total of 6775 subjects from nationwide 13 health check-up centres were included in this cross-sectional study. Fatty liver was evaluated using ultrasonography. Significant (≥F2) and advanced (≥F3) hepatic fibrosi
More than 80% of Korean institutes were using TBSRTC as of 2012. All malignancy rates other than the SFN and malignancy categories were higher than those reported by other countries. Therefore, the guidelines for treating patients with thyroid nodules in Korea should be revisited based on the malignancy rates reported in this study.
Sarcopenia is prevalent in patients with chronic liver disease, and affected patients tend to have worse clinical outcomes and higher mortality. However, relevant analyses are limited by heterogeneity in the definition of sarcopenia and in the methodological approaches in assessing it. We reviewed several radiologic methods for sarcopenia in patients with chronic liver disease. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) can measure muscle mass, but it is difficult to evaluate muscle quality using th
The fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index is the most widely used estimated formula to screen for advanced hepatic fibrosis; however, it has a considerable intermediate zone. Here, we propose an algorithm to reduce the intermediate zone and improve the diagnostic performance of screening for advanced liver fibrosis by incorporating Mac-2-binding protein glycan isomer (M2BPGi) into a FIB-4 based screening strategy in an average risk group. Four-hundred eighty-eight healthy and chronic liver disease subjects w
Purpose To evaluate the prevalence of tumefactive sludge of the gallbladder detected at ultrasonography (US) and to assess whether any clinical and imaging differences exist between benign and malignant tumefactive sludge. Materials and Methods The institutional review board approved this retrospective study. The requirement for informed consent was waived. The study included a cohort (n = 6898) of patients with gallbladder sludge drawn from all adults (n = 115 178) who underwent abdominal US be
This study correlated conventional ultrasonography (US) signs with the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) proton density fat fraction (PDFF) to evaluate the diagnostic performance of US signs (alone or combined) to predict presence and degree of hepatic steatosis (HS). Overall, 182 subjects met the study inclusion criteria between February 2014 and October 2016. Four US signs were evaluated independently by two radiologists. MRI PDFF was defined as the average of 24 non-overlapping regions of inte
Background It is debated whether diagnostic performance of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), which is widely used for detection and characterization of various malignant tumors, is comparable with high-risk stigmata of 2012 international consensus guidelines (ICG) for diagnosis of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs). Purpose To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of diffusion restriction in IPMNs for prediction of malignancy and invasiveness in comparison with high-risk stigmata of 201
The results of this study showed that ANN-based computer-assisted diagnostics can be used to accurately detect pneumoperitoneum in abdominal radiographs, reduce the time delay in diagnosing urgent diseases such as pneumoperitoneum, and increase the effectiveness of clinical practice and patient care.
BACKGROUND: The sensitivity of computed tomography (CT) for the detection of peritoneal metastasis (PM) of advanced gastric cancer (AGC) is relatively low. PURPOSE: To develop a predictive model to improve the sensitivity of PM detection and to externally validate this model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed data from 78 patients with PM, who had undergone preoperative CT and subsequent surgery between January 2012 and December 2014, and 101 controls to form a derivation set, retrospectively. T
Visual comparison of arterial and unenhanced phases could be recommended instead of conventional qualitative arterial phase alone assessment to determine arterial hyperenhancement of HCCs, especially when using CT.
Mammary carcinoma arising in microglandular adenosis (MGA) is extremely rare, and MGA is regarded as a non-obligate precursor of triple-negative breast cancer. We report five cases of carcinoma arising in MGA of the breast. All cases showed a spectrum of proliferative lesions ranging from MGA to atypical MGA, ductal carcinoma in situ or invasive carcinoma. Immunohistochemically, all cases were triple-negative and expression of S-100 protein gradually decreased as the lesions progressed from MGA
