About the Lab

Professor Min Ju Kim's research lab specializes in biomedical engineering and translational medicine, focusing on developing innovative biomaterials and therapeutic strategies for chronic diseases. Key research directions include designing injectable hydrogel depots for targeted drug delivery in inflammatory joint diseases, exploring the protective effects of natural antioxidants like lycopene and genistein in metabolic and renal disorders, and advancing medical imaging techniques for non-invasive diagnosis and staging of conditions such as hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia and rectal cancer. The lab integrates materials science, molecular biology, and clinical imaging to improve treatment outcomes in metabolic, renal, and musculoskeletal diseases.

SJR Q1Journal of Surgical Oncology

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the relationship between pretreatment clinical parameters and lateral pelvic node (LPN) recurrence in patients with rectal cancer treated with a combination of curative resection and chemoradiotherapy (CRT) and attempted to identify the patients who might benefit from LPN dissection. METHODS: This study involved 900 patients between June 2001 and June 2009. Pretreatment clinical parameters including radiological size of LPN were analyzed to identify risk factors associat

SJR Q2Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine

Contrast-enhanced gray scale harmonic sonography showed the typical vascularity of a spoked wheel pattern during the vascular phase and persistent enhancement on serial acoustic emission imaging in most cases of hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia, and thereby it can be a promising technique in noninvasive diagnosis of this entity.

Transrectal ultrasonography of anorectal diseases: advantages and disadvantages
Min Ju Kim
SJR Q1ULTRASONOGRAPHYOA

Transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) has been widely accepted as a popular imaging modality for evaluating the lower rectum, anal sphincters, and pelvic floor in patients with various anorectal diseases. It provides excellent visualization of the layers of the rectal wall and of the anatomy of the anal canal. TRUS is an accurate tool for the staging of primary rectal cancer, especially for early stages. Although magnetic resonance imaging is a modality complementary to TRUS with advantages for eva

Efficacy of Barium-Based Fecal Tagging for CT Colonography: a Comparison between the Use of High and Low Density Barium Suspensions in a Korean Population - a Preliminary Study
Min Ju Kim, Seong Ho Park, Seung Soo Lee, Jeong‐Sik Byeon, Eugene Choi, Jung Hoon Kim, Yeoung Nam Kim, Ah Young Kim, Hyun Kwon Ha
SJR Q1Korean Journal of RadiologyOA

Barium-based fecal tagging using both the 40% w/v and the 4.6% w/v barium suspensions showed moderate tagging efficacy. The preliminary comparison did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference in the tagging efficacy between the use of the two tagging agents, despite the tendency toward better tagging with the use of the 4.6% w/v barium suspension.

The Korean Journal of Hepatology

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Alcohol and the hepatitis B virus (HBV) exert synergistic effects in hepatocelluar carcinogenesis. We aimed to elucidate the clinical significance of the antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) and occult HBV infection on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis (LC). METHODS: Patients with alcoholic LC alone (n=193) or combined with HCC (n=36), who did not have HBsAg or antibody to hepatitis C virus were enrolled. Clin
