About the Lab
Professor Min-Ok Ryu's research lab specializes in regenerative medicine and immunomodulation, focusing on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from various sources—including adipose tissue, umbilical cord blood, and fetal tissue—for the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The lab investigates the therapeutic mechanisms of MSCs and their secreted factors, particularly TSG-6 and PGE₂, in preclinical models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), acute pancreatitis (SAP), and acute kidney injury (AKI). A central theme is the modulation of macrophage polarization toward the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype and the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs), highlighting the role of MSC-derived extracellular vesicles and soluble mediators in resolving inflammation. The lab also explores endoplasmic reticulum stress pathways as therapeutic targets in inflammatory conditions.

3Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is an acute and life-threatening disease most commonly affecting large- and giant-breed dogs. However a 17-year-old Shih-tzu (4 kg, spayed female) was hospitalized for acute GDV. Repeated unproductive retching, lethargy, and excessively enlarged abdomen were observed. Physical examination indicated that the patient had suffered from hypothermia (36.5oC), tachycardia (240 bpm), slowed capillary refill time (> 2 sec.), and pale mucous membrane. Grade III murmu
A 10-year-old poodle with left maxillofacial osteosarcoma received volumetric modulated arc therapy delivering 32 Gy in four fractions. Treatment planning was guided by computed tomography-magnetic resonance imaging (CT-MRI) fusion for precise target delineation near the globe. Serial CT and MRI up to 12 months after treatment showed transient enlargement of intratumoral cysts with fluid-fluid levels immediately after treatment, indicating pseudoprogression, followed by marked tumor regression.
