About the Lab
Professor Min-Soo Jo's research lab specializes in surgical oncology and cardiovascular medicine, with a focus on improving outcomes in colorectal cancer and anticoagulation therapy for atrial fibrillation. The lab investigates advanced surgical techniques such as robotic and laparoscopic total mesorectal excision, emphasizing long-term oncologic and functional outcomes. It also conducts large-scale observational studies on antithrombotic therapy, particularly non–vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs), in East Asian populations, aiming to optimize dosing and safety. Additionally, the lab explores prognostic biomarkers in rectal cancer, such as extramural vascular invasion on MRI, and investigates post-transplantation complications like post-transplantation diabetes mellitus.

15The true benefits of robotic surgery are controversial, and whether robotic total mesorectal excision (R-TME) can be justified as a standard treatment for rectal cancer patients needs to be clarified. This case-matched study aimed to compare the postoperative complications and short- and long-term outcomes of R-TME and laparoscopic TME (L-TME) for rectal cancer.Among 1029 patients, we identified 278 rectal cancer patients who underwent R-TME. Propensity score matching was used to match this grou
Background and Purpose— Limited data are available describing the relative effectiveness, safety, and optimal dosing of non–vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) for treatment of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation in East Asian patients. We tried to compare effectiveness and safety outcomes of standard- and low-dose NOACs and warfarin in this population. Methods— Using nationwide administrative claims-based datasets from the Korean National Health Insurance Service Database (July 1, 2015
BACKGROUND: Despite consistent recommendations from clinical guidelines, data from randomized trials on a long-term antithrombotic treatment strategy for patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease are still lacking. METHODS: -VASc score (scores range from 0 to 9, with higher scores indicating a greater risk of stroke). The primary outcome was a composite of death from any cause, myocardial infarction, stroke, systemic embolism, unplanned urgent revascularization, and ma
We have successfully established the mCME technique, on the basis of the same principle as CME, but with a more tailored approach. The long-term oncologic outcomes and risk of postoperative morbidity were found to be comparable with those seen with the original CME procedure.
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of baseline magnetic resonance imaging-based extramural vascular invasion status (EMVI) among rectal cancer patients with a good tumor response to standard chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery. METHODS: A total of 359 patients with ypT0-2/N0 disease from The Yonsei Multicenter Colorectal Cancer Electronic Database were retrospectively included between January 2000 and December 2014. Magnetic resonance images and medical records were
The aim of this study was to describe in more detail the predisposition, natural course, and clinical impact of post-transplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) after heart transplantation (HT). The characteristics and clinical outcomes of 54 patients with PTDM were compared with those of 140 patients without PTDM. The mean age of PTDM patients was significantly higher than controls (48.9 ± 9.3 vs 38.6 ± 13.3 yr, respectively, P = 0.001), and ischemic heart disease was a more common indication of H
INTRODUCTION: The incidence and predictors of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) after permanent pacemaker (PM) implantations have not been well evaluated. We attempted to determine TR's natural course and predictors, especially focusing on the influence of atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: Data from 530 patients with dual-chamber PMs were evaluated. The main study outcomes were moderate to severe TR and isolated TR (moderate to severe TR without other structural heart diseases [SHDs]) in follow-up e
The relationship between blood pressure (BP) response during exercise and future cardiovascular events remains unclear. We assessed the association between an increase in early systolic BP (SBP) during exercise tests and future cardiovascular events in patients with sustained hypertension (sHT). Between 2002 and 2005, we enrolled 300 patients newly diagnosed with mild-to-moderate sHT without complications from the Asan Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring registry. All the patients successfully
Background To characterize the development of sick sinus syndrome ( SSS ) after the additive maze procedure ( MP ) during mitral valve surgery. Methods and Results Follow-up data (median, 3.6 years) of 750 patients with a prevalence of rheumatic cause of 57.6% were analyzed. SSS occurred in 35 patients with a time-dependent increase: the incidence rates at 1, 2, and 4 years after surgery were 2.9%, 3.7%, and 4.3%, respectively. The additive MP showed higher risks of SSS development (hazard ratio
