About the Lab

Professor Min-Kyu Kim's research lab specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer and complex gastrointestinal conditions. The lab focuses on optimizing surgical outcomes in challenging patient populations, such as obese patients, and investigates critical surgical margins and their impact on long-term survival. Research also extends to innovative applications of laparoscopy in rare or complex cases, such as giant duodenal ulcer perforations, demonstrating the versatility and safety of advanced laparoscopic approaches.

BACKGROUND: In the surgical treatment of gastric cancer, obesity is known to be a predictive factor for poor early surgical outcomes. To evaluate the more effective modality of laparoscopic gastrectomy in obese patients, we compared the early surgical outcomes of laparoscopy-assisted and totally laparoscopic gastrectomy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed early surgical outcomes in 1,480 consecutive patients who underwent distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer between April 2004 and July 2010.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to estimate the impact of obesity on surgical outcomes of laparoscopic-assisted gastrectomy for gastric cancer. STUDY DESIGN: Between January 2005 and January 2010, 1100 consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic-assisted distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer were reviewed to evaluate the impact of obesity. The patients were classified into 3 groups according to the World Health Organization classification, as normal weight [body mass index (BMI) 18.5 to

The distance of proximal resection margin dose not significantly influence on the prognosis of gastric cancer patients after curative resection
Min Gyu Kim, JuHee Lee, Tae Kyung Ha, Sung Joon Kwon
SJR Q2Annals of Surgical Treatment and ResearchOA

PURPOSE: It is well known that the curative resection with an adequate proximal margin length is the most effective treatment in gastric cancer. However, despite surgeon's effort to achieve a sufficient proximal margin length, it is often difficult to obtain a recommended proximal margin length in some cases. Therefore, this study was planned to investigate the impact of the length of proximal margin on prognosis of overall survival. METHODS: Between June 1992 and December 2010, 1,888 gastric ca

Laparoscopic Surgery for Perforated Duodenal Ulcer Disease
Min Gyu Kim
SJR Q2Surgical Laparoscopy Endoscopy & Percutaneous Techniques

Our results suggest that laparoscopic surgery may be applied to all duodenal ulcer perforations. However, because of the learning period, we believe that laparoscopic surgery may not be suited to every surgeon. However, when performed by laparoscopic experts, laparoscopic surgery can be a valuable approach for treating difficult duodenal ulcer perforations.

PURPOSE: The present study aims to provide an applicability of laparoscopic gastrectomy used in the treatment of giant duodenal ulcer perforation. METHODS: Between July 2010 and April 2011, laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with ROUX-EN-Y gastrojejunostomy and truncal vagotomy was performed in consecutive 5 patients with giant duodenal ulcer perforation. RESULTS: There was no conversion to open surgery. There was no severe postoperative complication. The days of normalization of leukocytosis were

Purpose: To evaluate the necessity for additional surgical treatment after Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), we analyzed the pathologic results of patients who underwent surgical treatment. Methods: 140 consecutive patients underwent additional surgical treatment after EMR/ESD with en bloc resection between April 2005 and November 2009 at ASAN Medical Center. Additional surgical treatments were undergone for following conditions such as incomplete dis
