1에너지안보와 기후변화 대응 탄소중립 달성을 앞세워 무탄소 청정에너지원인 원전의 역할이 재조명되고 있다. 후쿠시마 원전 사고 이후 탈원전을 주도했던 유럽이 원자력발전으로 선회하면서 원전 건설 수요가 크게 늘고 있다. 특히 대용량 원전의 배치와 활용에서 경직성의 약점을 보완하면서 수요지 분산형 배치와 수요대응 운영 및 다목적 활용이 가능하고, 재생에너지원과 공존이 가능한 소형모듈원자로(SMR)가 미래에너지산업을 이끌 게임체인저로 역할이 조망되고 있다. SMR이 에너지산업시장이 기대하는 에너지원 역할을 위한 시장 진입에는 운전 유연성과 탄력적인 활용성, 수용성 등의 경쟁력 있는 조건을 갖추어야 한다. 본 논문은 SMR이 대형 원자로와 비교하여 경제성이 낮음에도 불구하고 미래 에너지원으로 등장한 배경과 기술적 유래, 잠재적 활용성, 게임체인저가 되기 위한 도전과제들을 살펴본다.
